The power of jet engines always blows my mind. Beautiful works of engineering.

Still my favorite aircraft I've flown in because every takeoff felt like I was in a rocket. There's something about those fuselage-mounted engines and that wing design. Combine that with the fact that one of these has NEVER been lost, it was a hell of a plane.

Listening to the sheer power and majesty of a jet engine never gets old! What a marvel jet travel is!

These little jets are real rocket ships. Douglas designed a great wing!

I had the fortune of flying a Delta 717 out of SFO to LAX. I was looking forward to it and the take off roll was fantastic. The climbing performance did not disappoint!

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) had old DC-9-20's years ago. Douglas only made 10 of that type. It had the original short fuselage of the -10 model but had the longer advanced wing of the -30 with the slats. The pilots LOVED IT. They called it the "Sport" because you could launch it off of short runways and climb like a bottle rocket.

This is by far the best footage of a 717 I’ve seen to date!

I flew a 717 from PVD to DTW, I was looking forward to the flight but I would have never imagined how amazing it was. Easily one of the most rememberable flights ever.

I have been in a 717-200, and out of SeaTac, ours was a bit more steeper. Seems to be the norm for these 717s. love it!

The one and only time I flew on a 717 was Qantaslink between Ayers Rock and Cairns. I was on the back row for the entire flight with nothing but the engine for my view out. Watching the front of the aircraft pull up whilst at the back is something I won’t forget!

This pilot was not letting off the throttle looks like through flight level 100!!

That is indeed one steep, powerful take-off....lovely!

I like that the aircraft started its right turn to the south before it was at the north end of the airfield.

This takeoff was following common noise abatement procedure used at many airports in high-density urban areas — a rapid, high-power initial climb to several thousand feet, followed by a power reduction and slower climb until the aircraft is clear of the urban area.

this makes it the last passenger aircraft built at the now demolished Long beach Douglas Commercial factory?

One of the most beautiful sounds in the world!

Awesome video. Beautiful example of what is essentially an old airframe matched to a high-tech engine. Such a shame Boeing closed down production so early. There is still a market for this size of jet transport

Never tire of this vid, I watch it almost every day!

I remember the DC-9 pilots used to like to take off steep like that as well.
