Flying on the RARE Boeing 717 | Flight Review | IAD-ATL

In this travel vlog, we fly on Delta standard economy class on the vintage Boeing 717 from Washington Dulles Airport in DC to Atlanta International Airport in Georgia. While flying on a Boeing 737 or Airbus A321 may be the standard domestic airplane to fly on, in this review, I fly on one of the few 717's still in operation. only Delta Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and QantasLink still operate the Boeing in their fleets, thus this aircraft truly is a rare sight in airports across the world. *Bonus* The Boeing 717 takeoff is thrilling! The engine roar is fully audible within this video.

I can remember flying on the 717 when they still had that new plane smell with AirTran airways. Now you mentioned how old these planes are several times, and they might be compared to other airlines, but remember Delta seems to hang onto their aircraft a bit longer then others. The 717 was produced from 1998-2006 making the youngest 17 years old. Delta's fleet of 757 and 767 average age is just as old, if not older. And several A320 aircraft that were part of Northwest airlines fleet that merged into Delta I believe are even older. The 717 was a McDonnell Douglas design and is the grandchild of the DC-9. Northwest and later Delta had a large DC-9 fleet that was only retired less then a decade ago and at retirement many of these aircraft were over 40 years old. The old DC-9 was built like a tank and I bet the 717 was too!

It’s a shame the 717 won’t be flying much longer, they are headed to the same fate as the md-80s

This is just the latest variation of the venerable DC-9/MD-80/MD-95 family of aircraft. Delta put the first DC-9s into service starting in 1965. Total production of all the DC-9 variants approached 2, 000 total. Hawaiian Airlines currently operates 19 B-717s. There has never been a fatal incident in the flight operations of the B-717.

We island hop on these in Hawaii all the time! Love that engine roar on takeoff and views of the ocean while flying Interisland. I’m also an A&P mechanic and work on the type at our local airline.

I am so glad I am a part of this plane. I use the 717-200 from AVL-ATL. I have flown it around 3-4 times now. I realize that I’m very lucky to fly one of these before they disappear. These planes are incredibly amazing. Although I am young, I am still very sad that these are going out very soon. I will always have a story to tell people when I am older that I could be a part of this beautiful plane. I will try to fly the 717 even more. Goodbye 🫡

Dulles to Detroit and then on to Kansas City on these earlier this week, same seat too, the take off acceleration on these is unmatched on anything I've ever flown, , made me smile.

Wow, I didn’t realize how few of these are left. I get to fly on these planes like 20 times a year cause that’s all that flies between my little regional airport and the big international airports. They are an amazing plane to fly on.

The 717 is beautiful, but not super rare. You can find A LOT of them at Atlanta, but still an awesome piece of history!

Okay, I just looked this up to find out what the heck is this 717. I just flew on one (Delta) from Montreal to Atlanta and there was no IFE, even in First Class! I then caught my connecting flight to Jacksonville on a 757, which was a nicer plane with IFE but for a 43 minute flight it didn't matter as much. Would have rather had the bigger/better plane on the longer flight for sure. PS, yes there was Wifi for purchase for $15 but it was crap, a complete waste of money. They didn't even off the Delta Go-Go Entertainment on your device which you used to get if you were on a plane with no IFE.

How is the 717 rare? Delta still uses them everywhere. RIP to the MD-80s though, glad to have flown on them many times too. Both of these are great jets, quiet and comfortable. Also very safe! Much better track record than those 737s
