Kia e-Niro’s first service

My e-Niro went in for its first (belated) service. Other than my sticky flap (which is never good) it had a clean bill of health. There was one service item though: the granny cable needed a rubber cover.

Find out what they checked, how much it cost and see the very smallest of teasers for the Soul EV review, coming soon.

The service was £79 (incl. VAT) with Kia Canterbury.

The service was £79 (incl. VAT) – I do mention it later on in the video but should have said at the beginning!

Ticking the box to say it was fully re-charged when it wasn't is a cardinal sin. It means you cannot trust anything else they said they did.

I have a Kia Nero E
and a Tesla model three and I love them both equally. They both have their own excellent things and they both have a couple of small negatives but all around my two favorite cars out there and that’s why I have them

Great Andrew as always love your honest and straightforward appraisals of all EV discussions. As well of course of your wife’s honest opinions. Superb well balanced report. Areas of service are of interest to us all as in a sense new territory to see what the service agent actually does for their £79. Keep it coming.

Hi. Ours was due it service in April also. In the end done a month ago at 8500 miles. No idea what they did but no issues reported. First time back at garage. ( Wessex Kia, Gloucester). All went well. Had a call a few weeks later for a "recall". Bit surprised but protector for granny lead fitted in five mins. Apparently they have been reported damaged. Car declared average consumption in first year of about 4.2 miles per kwh. Delighted with car so far. Keep going with video. Enjoy your updates.

I certainly hope that no one gives you any negative comments, Andrew. I am a 2018 Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor owner and the only people that might say that their Teslas are flawless, must not be very picky! I am hopeful that the cars that come out of Tesla's brand new factories will be of a much higher quality. There is a lot more involved than perfect fit and finish to make a great car. That is where Tesla is currently miles ahead of the rest of the pack, just in my opinion. Andrew, thank you so much for this awesome channel of yours and thank you for sharing your beautiful wife and daughter in your videos. Your wife has such a great sense of humor and we are not just here because of her beautiful accent!

I agree with you about Tesla. Yes free software upgrades. But many warranty visits during the first year. One amusing example, the rain sensing wipers (using a camera) never worked. The wipers used to turn on when entering Hindhead tunnel. No rain in the tunnel!

I'll be getting my e-Niro at the end of December and your channel has been a great way to keep me entertained until then. Really anticipating the Niro's delivery because of your videos, and they also help to be prepared for any practicalities. Cheers from a happy, new subscriber!

In The Netherlands, the service costs 70 euro including VAT, according to the dealer here.

With regard to leaving the car with a 100% SoC: the battery in the e-Niro is actually a bit bigger than 64 kWh, just limited software wise. So even when it says full, it isn't, so less risk of harming the battery.

Nice to hear your wife again. You can hear the Italian sun in her voice 😊

I use one of them Midtronics testers in my line of work, never used it on my car battery though. My Leaf’s first service took an hour including a wash and vacuum so I waited, now if they have an Ariya as a courtesy car I would love to have a go.

FYI - Checking freeplay in the steering: they check how much you can move the steering wheel left to right without any left to right movement of the wheels. It checks for excessive wear in the steering mechanism.

Think free play refers to, when turning the steering wheel:

• does the steering wheel need to be rotated excessively before the front wheels start to change direction? Possible worn/dislocation of steering linkages, rack, etc.

• is there the recommend amount of free play, so that while resting hands on steering wheel, very slight movements can be made, without altering the direction of the car’s travel while in motion? Resulting in sudden over-steer.

They ticked the, ‘Fully charge high voltage battery...’ but didn’t do it. One has to wonder what else they ticked but didn’t check/do.

I had my "granny charger" updated on my 2018 Niro PHEV at Maidstone Kia back in July this year too. Same as yours - rubber outer protection. I only used it a couple of times though, before my wall box got installed.

I didn't much care for the styling of the soul ev initially but over the past year, it has grown on me. I now prefer the style of the soul over the Niro but would still buy the Niro. If I was younger I would buy the soul

Test drove the blue Soul EV two days ago. We owned the diesel variant 2 years ago and loved it, didn’t like the EV at all too black and claustrophobic the dash seems a lot higher than our old one. Then we tried the Niro and my wife loved it so now have the 4+ on order hopefully for December delivery. It’s goodbye to our Kona Electric, I loved it but my wife felt it a bit small, one interesting thing though, the Kona gets free map upgrade whenever it’s service, surprise that Kia make a charge but £25 not too bad.

If the Niro is the same as the i3 charging flap it is just the tension of a spring that opens the flap. In colder months, the metal contracts and isn't able to open the flap. I removed the flap and added grease, but it wasn't until it warmed up that it worked 100%.

So they ticked Charge vehicle and lubricate sunroof. Looks to me like they just ticked every box (and sometimes between boxes) without even looking. Makes you wonder if they even did half the stuff on there.
