I have them as a pet. I also have snails, water mites and daphnia all in the same tank as the scuds and they all seem to get along just fine for the most part.

Thanks Dan,
Just got my scuds yesterday and the fork in a food idea is genius. Love it.

Awesome info, very descriptive and well done video. I’ve seen them on my green beans in shrimp tanks before, had no idea it was that simple to culture them, thanks for sharing!

Oh, man!!! Thanks for the feeding tips!
I got scuds somewhere (no clue where, all the live plants I have in the 10 gallon "scud tank" actually a pest snail tank, lol).
I tried overripe banana and they went
They're entertaining, but sometimes I do feed them to my bettas.

Found your video after hearing Cory (Aquarium Co-OP) talk about scuds. I was trying to raise snails for my pea puffer and these little guys showed up. I wasn't getting many snails so, I started feeding these to the puffer. She loves them and so does her tank mate, a huge ghost shrimp. I really had no idea what they were called. I had even taken some of these to the only fish store we have (50 miles away) and the owner could not tell me what they were. I had no idea what to feed them to keep them going. I was using vacation fish feeders but I noticed that they were also eating the snails. Gave them some cooked carrots after seeing this and they swarmed on them. Now I know how to keep them coming. Thanks for a great video.

I have some in a jar as well as some flatworms and microscopic creatures and plants. Watching them swim is satisfying.

Great tutorial. Thank you Dan. Now I can start my own scuds. This is something I have been wanted to do for a very long time. Just didn't know how to. I will now be ordering a culture.

Wow I think this is one of the best scud cultures I've seen including my own. Definitely gonna take some pointers from your setup very nice. I have a few buckets with live plants hornwort and little have moss and some leaves at the bottom mine seem to by doing good but I like your setup

Dan, great topic! I think Acids may have a larger part to play, maybe, possibly.
As a fly fisher, I get to know a bit about local invertebrates and Schds exist darned near everywhere. I have seen them from about 3/16 of an inch, to darn near large enough to fillet, they are one of the top food invertebrates out there. They are prolific and do not need heat to survive. Most ice fishers will see them when they drill holes, Gammarus are everywhere. They are also good at cleaning up garbage, waste, protein based foods. I have watched them help in the disposal of dead fish, though never to the point where you could say they predate on them (Fry) I would not say they wouldn't. They sort of seem to be on the carnivorous side of the food chain.
Yep, awesome fish food, but I wonder how they would be as part of the clean up crew?
