How to culture Freshwater Amphipods/Scuds

preview_player
Показать описание
Called amphipods, scuds, gammarus, or Hyalella azteca, these prolific, hardy crustaceans make excellent live fish food.
LINKS to scud/amphipod foods and supplies for your culture:

Amphipods can be co-cultured with daphnia, or cultured on their own. Amphipods make a great live food for fish as well as aquatic amphibians. The newly born amphipods are tiny, so small fish and and growing fry can eat them, and the adults are large enough to make a good live food for medium-sized and even some larger fish,

These turned up in one of my planted tanks-I call it a wet terrarium haha. Anyway, I got snails and scuds from the plants I purchased apparently and I am not upset by this . Happy to have life enjoying itself in my space

I used these guys as the basis for my outdoor pond and they are an excellent source of food for the fish.

They just showed up in my 50gal shrimp tank. Nothing introduced for over 6 months and have only appeared recently. They are super happy with the shrimp and snails, so welcome home I guess.

I'm glad that I found this video and learned of the benefits of these creatures. I had some hitchhike in on plants that I purchased and have bred rapidly. I was going to break down my entire tank in an attempt to get rid of them but have decided to let them stay. Apparently I have a good thing and didn't realize it.

I love these little guys. Ever since I started keeping them and other small invertebrates I find myself more fascinated by them than the fish.

We just found some stray scuds in our quarantine tank we took down and I have the perfect daphnia set up where I'm going to culture these. My fish are going to love it. Thanks for the tips!

I got some Guppy grass in the mail and just found 2 of these little guys swimming around in my 3 gallon tank. I keep extra plants in there, no fish. Hopefully I will see more and they will start breeding

I was sampling for aquatic macroinvertebrates today and we caught a ton of these! I'm happy to know what their order is, because I was stumped!

Great video. They love aquarium mosses - they live in them. Xmas moss is my preferred habitat.

then planing to move as many as i can find over to my emerced settup to use as live food for my 30g planted community. this video helped alot.

Would you set them up a tank/keep/feed them similar to Mystery snails if you just thought they were adorable and wanted them as "pets "?

I had these and ghost shrimp in my turtle tank they invaded the internet and it never smelled bad. I would do half water changes water was always super clear.

@aquarimax What is that organism at 2:07 top-left-centre. There are 2 tiny scuds and then that round thing with flat profile i sometimes see in my aquarium that pisses me off.

Tip: If these guys colonize in you filter full a bucket up with saltwater and put your sponges anf filters in ; it will kill all of them. Afterwards, you can wash out the filter then strain the water using a fish net and all the dead scuds can be fed to your fish
