English Language Vocabulary Lesson on the origin of English Words (English Etymology)

In this video, Mr. P./Marc will briefly explain the origins of the English language. He will give some examples of words that contributed to the formation of English, starting from the Celts until the arrival of the Normans. He will also go over and review the words that were from other cultures, including Hindi, Turkish, and Arabic. He will then end with a question for the spectator.

Mr. P. is a Canadian English Teacher/Coach from Toronto, Canada, who has been teaching English since 1997. He is a certified English teacher specializing in EFL, ESL, TOESL, TOEFL, #IELTS, KET, PET, CAE, FCE, and CPE. He taught English to adults in Rome for 20 years and became an Honorary Fellow at UNITELMA Sapienza University in Rome in 2015.

Indo-European doesn’t mean the language came from India to Europe, it means the languages are spoken in the land mass between Indian subcontinent and Europe. (Turkish, Finnish, Hungarian being exceptions)

No one knows for sure the exact location of where the original language was spoken. Some refer to religious scripts to estimate the original homeland.

Hi, you forgot to mention Persian language. Bazaar, kabab, pajama, caravan, and punch are some examples. Some of these words like pajama entered French and came back to Iran with French pronunciation. Pajama = pa or pai means foot and jama or jameh means clothes. Punch comes from Persian word panj means five. This word goes to Indian language and people think it's an Indian word. Punjab is an example of Persian influence. Punj = five, ab = water. Indian was under Persian rule for over 2 centuries. There are so many Persian words in Indian language. I don't know Indian but I can pick up many many Persian words in it.

Unfortunately there is no recognition for the oldest language Tamil, the under rated dark horse. There are plenty of English words which relates either directly to Tamil language or seeped through various deformations via Sanskrit, Greek or Latin etc into English.
Examples.
Button is actually a Tamil word pronounced as Pothaan for thousands of years.
Sponge = Panju actually used to refer cotton.
Pipe= Pazhuppu in Tamil
Paleo was actually Pazhaya or old in Tamil.
Betrothal is actually a Tamil word Petror ( Parents)+ Oppudhal acceptance) Petroropputhal.
Puddings = Puttu
Red comes from Ratham
Emperor Empire comes from Embiran means great ruler of a vast area.

"Thol""tholai" is used in Tamil to refer distance which gradually became Thel and later as tele and used in words like telephone ( Tholaipesi) television (tholaikatchi) telegraph telegram.
Doosu became Dust, Dhool
Payattu Tamil word becomes Fight.
Theyyal-, theyyalar becomes Tailor.
Thechu becomes Stichu and stitch.
Thachchar, thachachan becomes Thachar surname in England i.e Margret Thacher whose ancestor's were actually Roof Makers and stiching leaves and branches to make roof was their profession.
Earlier roofs were made by stiching leaves together and placing on the roofs.
Kalvettu becomes culvert in English
Kurippu becomes Skurippu and later script.
Oppari a kind of dance drama Tamil becomes Opera
Thadhai of Tamil becomes daddy in English.
Mandooram of Tamil gradually became Mound, Mount, mountain etc.

Pagoda from Tamil word Pagavadi i.e A house for a diety.
Teak a Tamil word Theykku or teku.
Cash from Tamil word Kaasu. Even words like Casino, Casanova etc.
Eight from Tamil word Yettu.
One is from Tamil word Ondru.

All English words having TERRA comes from the Tamil word Tarai. Tarai means Ground, floor or in a larger sense a place or an area.
Territory, Terestrial, Extra Terrestrial.
Extra itself Ex + Terra means above normal level. Ultra means something beyond normal level of cognition.
Still there are hundreds of words not only in English but in almost all parts of the world which needs deep study. In fact the very word ETYMOLOGY itself is a deformations of combination of Tamil words Aadi + Moolam+ Alasi. Aadi or Aadhi means first or earliest. Moolam means root or origin. Alasi means to checking thoroughly. Aalosi similarly to mentally probe. Aadhi+moola+alasi = Deforms into Ethymologi or Etymology.
