Hydrothermal vents in the deep sea

In many areas of high volcanic activity, water seeps into the sub-surface where it is intensely heated and then finds its way to the surface again. Examples on the land include hot springs in therapeutic spas, and special types like geysers and fumaroles.

In the ocean, this circulation occurs most commonly at the mid-ocean ridge, the world's longest mountain chain. Here, far below the depth of sunlight penetration, hydrothermal vents at over 400°C with their dissolved compounds provide the basis for complex ecosystems.

An interesting note: the Manus Basin is going to be the site for the world's first experimental deep-sea mines, run by Nautilus Minerals, commencing 2018.  They are targeting sulfide deposits, which happen to be in and around the hydrothermal vents themselves, meaning most marine life at the mining sites will be destroyed.  It's a very controversial issue, and something to think about!

Another huge benefit of capturing the thermal energy from these hydrothermal vents, beyond generating electricity, is the venting off of a percentage of its thermal energy out of the water, which helps to generate aquatic cooling or compensation for mankind's direct thermal contribution.

I can't help but wonder how valuable the minerals at these vents might be.

Why are some vents teeming with life while others are barren, are the minerals and gases being released different? If so why?

GORGEOUS! I bet there is more than just animal life deep in the Ocean, since creatures don't need the sun to exist!

Global investors and companies should be looking into harvesting the energy from these hydrothermal vents, which could potentially run large sterling engines, or even large steam engines to generate electric power, throughout the life of the vent.

Theoretically, if a double wall cylinder was placed above a hydrothermal vent, the depth of the water. As the thermal energy rose through the chimney tube it would turn to steam, long before reaching the surface. The tube could be capped and the steam used to turn a generator.

Great video. Could you please explain what are those blob-like structures at minute 7:00 and where are those formations located? Thank you very much in advance. Safe diving!
