Blacksmith Forging a Viking Style Letter Opener

No good for opening throats but it does very well on envelopes. I forge a letter opener for myself.

I am just learning, if you see something i could have done better please let me know in the comments below so myself and other people learning can gain from your knowledge.

Repeatabilily is the key to making progress in blacksmithing. And that means forging in such a way that the next step is predictable. First step in forging a round bar is to forge it to square, a uniform square with even lines and edges. Then forge the square bar into a uniform flat bar, keeping it even and straight. Then forge the point. All through this process taking the time to even up and keep the project straight, even thickness and/or taper, and the edges smooth. If desperate for proper steel, consider a junkyard steel chart. Try old tire irons for example. Also invest in a hot cut hardy, using the edge of the anvil to cut is one reason so many anvils have crummy edges.

On a lot of videos the iron looks hotter in the picture than it actually is. I don't know if you have a high quality camera or not, but it appears that you are sometimes working the metal when it is no longer red. For mild steel not a problem, but that crack you showed with the veining tool might have been from hitting it too cool. Tool steel is not as forgiving. But, thanks for posting and showing your work.
