Is Russia's Su-57 really that good?

Russia's Su-57 is marketed as one of the world’s most advanced fifth-generation fighter jets, boasting advanced stealth, supermaneuverability, and high-tech avionics. Yet, no foreign countries are interested in purchasing the jet, and Russia has substantially cut its order from 250 to around two dozen.

This failure highlights broader issues and trends within Russia's military-industrial complex, as the war in Ukraine has led to its once thriving arms export industry to collapse.

The Russians do not have a fleet of Su-57s. They have 19 prototypes. The plane is paper tiger. Nothing more.

If high maneuverability is a requirement for a 5th gen fighter why is the F35 classified as a 5th gen? It's practically a flying motherboard with the shape of a brick

We’ve seen Russias ‘best tank in the world’ exactly ZERO times in the Ukraine war, the Hypersonic Kinzal that isn’t really hypersonic so forgive me if I don’t believe the SU57 lives up to the Rusky propaganda-few things do!

Cost per unit of F 22 = 350 Million dollar
Cost per unit of Su 57 = 35 Million dollar
Will 1 F 22 able to defeat 2-3 Su 57?
Ans -: Absolutely not so
Su 57 in large number is much effective and proving it's capability. It is not used to shoot balloons 😂😂

But It is a good looking 4th Generation Fighter

India made a very smart move to drop out of the Su57 arrangement. Russia was simply bleeding money out of India, probably buying properties in the west, and making all kinds of excuses for endless delays and needing more money.

Just making one factual correction here, the F22 was definitely not retired 9 years ago because it's not even retired today, and probably won't be until the 2030s with NGAD coming out. It's currently getting upgrades to the R3 standard with Link16 and other modern sensors and communication.

On paper it's actually pretty good if you can interpret the information properly. The biggest misconception out about it is "minimal RCS" vs "median RCS" / "average RCS". Plus people forget that it is made almost entirely of radar absorbent materials unlike the F-22 and F-35 that are mostly "just" stealth coated, which the final production model Su-57s are as well. Militaries organizations have made statements that they are careful not to underestimate it which is somewhat in opposition to the lack of buyers who base alot of their information on media spin which references that misconception as "it's way less stealthy" or "so unstealthy it's 4.5 generation at best". Even the "exposed intake" thing when it has a drop down engine blocker that creates and S-duct-on-demand is overlooked due to that information being purposely omitted from biased translators.

There are 3 real issues with the Su-57: the engines in the original models being underpowered, the country not having enough money or sourcing options to keep producing the aircraft at scale due to the slowed economy due to the war they started that earned them sanctions and lastly, Putin himself. Invading Ukraine completely ruined their own country. All those lost working age men, all that lost equipment, and now a country forced to support a stupid war. For what gain? War torn land? Even more sanctions? International hatred? Loss of GDP? "How To Be A Terrible Dictator" a playbook by Vladimir Putin.

It's funny because if the Su-57 was produced by a Ukraine that wasn't at war, according to what the Su-57 is on paper, it would have international buyers just because it is Ukrainian. It would be kept out of conflict and in development longer whilst being able to secure more funding internationally. It's fun to attack it now because it is the world's enemy but it's actually better than the detractors would have us believe. Regardless, in the most real sense they only have... *checks notes*... roughly 30. Even if you extrapolate this into the far future, their production rate will simply make the Su-57 the stealth fighter of the country that no one in their right mind would want to do have anything to do with even if they can get the numbers up. Russian people often ask the world why the world has such a problem with them; blame your leader. Russia's truly biggest enemy is Putin himself.

A Ukrainian Russia analyst. What is Ukraine's latest jet? is it an Su 27?😂

Sweden doesn't produce 5:th generation airplanes according to that definition. The stealth capability has been replaced by anti-radar capability, and if that is a valid replacement, then Gripen *might* be somewhat ... 5:ish.

I've done extensive research on the Felon, and it's funny to see people make false claims about the Su-57 and make it look like a bad plane. For example, bringing the fact that an Su-57 got bombed into the equation. How does that matter at all?

Of course it is good. It is a stealth aircraft that has NEVER been shot down or even seen in combat!

Su57 may or may not be a paper bear, but the main problem is that they don't have enough money to fully develop the fighter, let along being able to buy enough of them to make them operationally useful. Right now it's like a low-production, expensive Ferrari that's constantly broken down that the owner can't do the upkeep or drive.
By the way, the 4th/5th/6th generation designation has neither commonly accepted criteria nor military significance: it doesn't mean that a 5th gen will always beat a 4th gen, or that's it'll always be more expensive, and not all fighters in the "same generation" are created equal. It's really more of a marketing slogan/tool and propaganda than anything else.
