Italian here, you absolutely nailed it! If you're interested and you enjoy the lemon flavor, where I live, we make a variant of this recipe: first you make a "battuto" of garlic and italian parsley, which means you have to finely chop them together it, so the flavors will mix right from the start. Then take a skillet and add olive oil and the battuto you just made, after that you can start the heat, which has to be low: we don't want to fry the garlic, just to make it translucent. When the garlic has softened, add the lemon zest, kill the heat and cover: the residual heat from the stove and the skillet will render the flavor from the lemon zest.
Make your pasta (spaghetti or linguine are traditional) al dente, then throw it into the skillet, together with some lemon juice, let the pasta absorb the lemon juice and serve. If you add it too soon, the heat will kill the tartness of the lemon and it will taste a bit "incomplete".
It's not as gourmet as yours, but it's quick and doesn't require as much heat.
Keep going, once you nail simplicity in the kitchen, you can do anything else!
