In 1970, Argentinian-Israeli conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim and his close friend, filmmaker Christopher Nupen, collaborated on a thirteen-part series about Ludwig van Beethoven – marking the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth. Lost to the British public for half a century, this series of films has never been shown together on national television in the UK. Now, as we celebrate the 250th anniversary in 2020, the episodes have been resurrected in their original form.

Episode 4 is an unforgettable recital: Barenboim’s fiery interpretation of the “Appassionata” Sonata, a spectacular encapsulation of the synthesis of extremes and contrasts so associated with Beethoven’s character.

Music piece excerpts performed:
01:22 Ludwig van Beethoven - Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57, "Appassionata"

Yes, absolute music is a language, and I never try to "translate" it with other languages as poetry or any other one because it would be limitating it I think

Allegro films seem to think we have very short attention spans. “I am going to play the whole Appassionata ….” Where is it??
