I really appreciate your approach of just trying stuff out / turning knobs and listening for what you like...and remembering to have fun. For those wondering why a longer release pulls up the reverb with the "time knob- OTT doesn't just lower volume like a standard compressor. It also raises the volume when the sound goes below a certain volume level. Basically imagine a crushing machine where the top and bottom meet at the middle and squish the object.

Also note about OTT: sometimes the effect can destroy dynamics and the transient so I recommend either turning down the downward compression a bit(so you mostly have upward compression) or add a transient shaper boosting the attack.

OTT is so overrated IMO and causes more harm than good, most of the time people think they’re after it’s squashed sound when in reality they just like the sound of the scooped mids, you can get a similar result just reducing the mids in an eq. Also OTT isn’t good for basses imo it badly messes up the phase, which you might not necessarily hear but it’s gonna reduce your headroom if you’re unlucky, amongst other things.
