I’ve lived in Montana and interior Maine and the winters there have to be experienced to be believed. But I still agree that colder weather probably offers more variety and options in men’s fashion. Having lived in fairly extreme cold (there’s always worse of course) I also enthusiastically agree with your recommendation of wool, especially for layering. Of course down is great, if less stylish, for the most brutal conditions—provided it stays dry. Really like the brogued boots.

Great video, as usual, Ash.

My top article of snug-wear for a winter in Southern England? Thermal long underwear.

This stuff has advanced considerably from the days of dingy and itchy "long johns". Today its made from polypropylene microifiber and other high-tech textiles, making it smooth against the skin, and with excellent wicking properties.

Simply adding thermal long underwear under almost any pair of regular trousers (from jeans to suits) and you'll be warm and comfy in any frigid outdoor, or indoor, situation you're likely to encounter.

When buying: Stay away from luxury materials like merino wool and silk. While these are very nice, they also require special laundering procedures. You want things you can toss in the washing machine and tumble dryer along with your regular loads. Microfiber also drip dries incredibly well if you want to keep your utility costs down.

Winter is nearly here
Never forget in Newcastle the guys will all be out in v neck vests or tee-shirts for the whimps amongst them and the girls out in miniskirts and 10 inch stilettos ..
Gloves .. hats ? 😂😂😂

I discovered that I really like and look good in flat caps a few years ago. I’m enjoying building a small collection. Grey, black and tweed

When it’s really cold, a simple pair of over trousers make a huge difference. Waiting on a cold & frosty train platform they keep the wind out & provide a thin layer of warmth over my wool trousers. Once seated I can quickly take them off.

Good morning Ash, Chaps
It has reverted to being too mild for mid-December. I prefer it to be cooler as I "run hot" as soon as I do any kind of activity. I am out for my annual Family visit to see a Stately Home's Christmas displays tomorrow. I normally go full Tweed and a flat cap. Tomorrow it may well be moleskins and a Sweater as it is meant to be 11DegC with sunny intervals!!! Wish me luck :D

Hi Ash, great video. I have been wanting to get into hats. At 55, I longer wear baseball caps and although I like them, no longer think that they are appropriate for daily wear at my age. Wide brim fedoras are catching my attention these days and I know that they are somewhat bold these days. Will be purchasing a couple flat caps for daily wear but here in Indianapolis, Indiana winter can be brutally cold and may need something for substantial for my head. And yes, natural fibers like wool are warmer than the synthetic ones. Looking into getting a long wool coat in the near future and probably a pair of dress boots. Thanks for the way that you present the information. Keep them coming!

Gloves, you got me there. And I think you´re right on the wool sweaters. Something one (synthetic-oholic) should look into...

Thanks Ash, it's always interesting to see this type of content from someone where it gets really cold in Winter. Where I am in Australia, it is quite rare for the temperate to go below 10 degrees, so my winter wardrobe mainly consists of fine Merino wool jumpers, and leather and cotton jackets (Macs, Harrington, Field etc), as this is all I need and I can layer as needed for the temperatures here.
I do have gloves, a scarf (in burgundy) and nice Merino charcoal beanie, but I only use these when I travel to Europe or North America in Winter (which is rare).
Definitely agree 100% on the boots, but I'll never be a hat man, haha, but that's just because they don't resonate with me - I have nothing against them and they do look good on some men, especially when they genuinely match the person, unlike the Fedora + t-shirt wearing nerds, where it just looks plain wrong.

I agree with the wool argument, I have a pure wool shirt which normally cost £205 or £215, I can't remember. But I paid £120 on offer and while it may seem expensive, it paid for itself over winter with the money I saved on gas.
Wool will always be my goto for cold weather clothing no matter what anyone says.

I too love this time of year as I get to break out my wool overcoat and the scarf my grandmother bought me many years ago, 100% wool made in Scotland.

Simple and sensible designs and materials always win the (very cold) day!

I seem to be reasonably well outfitted judging by your examples. I'm a fan ot the Fedora of which I own two as well as two Trilby's and three or four flat caps. Dress boots and a pair of Chuka's. Good to go with knit wear, shawl collar cardagin, roll neck - V neck and a vests in wool and Irish Tweed. Unlined gloves in Deer Skin and my new favorite slacks in Mole Skin. Now I hope we have enough winter this year in N.E. Florida so I can wear some of my Snug Wear - Hope Springs Eternal. Your Submariner Sweater is the Bee's Knees. Stay warm, mate.

I love a light-weight wool cardigan in navy, or hunter green, or chocolate brown, or camel, which I can layer under a tweed jacket or medium- weight sport coat in the fall. Thin turtleneck sweaters in a wool and cashmere blend also look great with a sport coat or blazer, and keep both the chest and neck warm.

In cooler weather, I wear either a cashmere, single-breasted navy top coat, a tweed herringbone top coat, or a double-breasted butterscotch wool-and-cashmere top coat with peaked lapels.

Burberry scarfs of wool or cashmere, patterned in grey or green, as opposed to their traditional plaid, protect the neck on colder days.

I get tremendous use out of a classic 40s style rabbit fur grey felt Fedora, made by Stetson, throughout the fall and into the early winter, but when the temperature drops well below freezing, as it does in southern Ontario, Canada, I opt for a black, lambswool Papakha, which is strikingly stylish, incredibly warm, and also protects the ears from the winter wind.

As I get ready for my Saturday shopping, I will be heading out with a tweed jacket and brown bowler. Yes you get the odd look, but most of the time here in Columbus I receive compliments. This evening I will be switching to a red patterned jacket with a fedora to attend a Christmas do for my wife’s lab.
