I prefer the Leadbelly version overall, it's so dark, eerie and powerful. Leadbelly's voice is unmatchable. A truly once in a history kind of talent. When even Kurt Cobain can't compare to you, you know you're a god.

Leadbelly is a legend and is irreplaceable, but my personal preference is Kurt on this track. He put a level of sincere emotion into his version that is just the perfect example of what makes the blues work

In my opinion both are equally amazing Kurt’s is more haunting as like a last cry for help while ledbellys is more a confession like song still haunting but darker in tone

They both are top notch recordings and I love them equally. Gotta give props to Leadbelly for recording and immortalizing the original version, which probably would have been lost to time otherwise. Props to Kurt for doing a wonderful live rendition and bringing it to the attention of hoards of new fans. And also to bands like CCR, Canned Heat, and The Rolling Stones for bringing Leadbelly to Kurt's attention and the attention of many other generations.
