Australian Raven vocalisation

Показать описание
While their loud territorial calls are familiar to everyone, it’s only when you spend time close-up with ravens that you notice a large repertoire of vocalisations. Listen carefully for the low whine (where he shows no outward signs of sound creation). Can’t be sure who was meant to hear this range of sounds; sometimes the female is obviously close, sometimes not. And occasionally he appears to “chat” to the one of us with the greater familiarity with the pair. He has also learned to knock on the back door if he is keen for a treat. Other interesting behaviour observed over the years includes using a birdbath to wash/soften food, similarly softening nesting material, trying to bamboozle other birds (particularly working as a pair) in order to grab a tail feather (they eat the core of a feather) and hiding food (with a look around to check whether other birds have noticed).
