It could be interesting if the millennium necklace/tauk, which lets you see the future, causes you to gradually lose your eyesight the more that you use it, as someone here suggested. Making it that you’re no longer able to ‘see’ the present, only the future. Another thought is that you gradually lose memories of your past and become a being who is of the present and future only.

The rods main power is mind control. The mere existence of Yami Marik is almost perfect for this, but he was created due to Marik’s trauma. It would be interesting if the rod causes your own mind to deteriorate with the more minds you have under control. Like you’re less and less able to think straight with the more minds you simultaneously control and it takes a psychological toll on you to recover.

The millennium scales are all about determining the innocence or guilt of a person’s soul. Those who are deemed evil are consumed by Amit. I think it’s only fitting that as a downside, you must only ever act in accordance to the scales sense of justice. Should you stray from the Just path you’ll be consumed the same as everyone else you have judged. And I think we all know, it’s extraordinarily difficult for someone to act ‘justly’ every moment of every day.

The millennium key/ankh is rather simple. We saw in the manga and anime that it is possible to enter a person‘s mind, but it is also possible to die inside a person‘s mind. You’re not able to utterly and indiscriminately enter a person‘s mind without consequence. There will be traps, there will be mental defenses and they can cause real, physical harm, not just mental harm as we saw in the source material.

Millenium eye makes you go insane if you arent destined to wear it.

Millenium ring stabs you with its pointers if you arent destined to wear it.

Millenium puzzle was full of shadow monsters thatll attack you as shown in the movie pyramid of light.

Im sure the others have drawbacks too

They should make a prequel series about their ancient past. History of the items and the shadow games. I would watch.

The necklace gives you the ability to predict the future but I feel like it also somewhat brainwashes you into believing you have no free will. Iirc, the rod helping Kaiba is what made him change the future but I always thought Ishizu could have defied fate if she didn't do the things she predicted.

Puzzle and Ring spirits were once alive who transfer their soul into the item to complete their destiny.
Brauka with the ring haven't had a chance.
Yugi was too innocent and good for any dark margic from puzzle to influence as he treat the puzzle as it is, a puzzle game, and just want to have friends. but Atem was very dark in season 0 but Yugi kindness help Atem to return or be more caring toward everyone then just mind crush everyone.
Shadi with Key and Scale was spirit so he was able spare by the items dark influence since he was a ghost. Iskaski used the necklaces sparly to stay in the present and seen what happened to brother but grew too confined in her necklace power against Seto Kabia.
However it does seem the item draw its user into evil, bring out their worst personality. Marik and Pegasus being the example as Pegasus took extreme measures and seek illusion what he wanted, Mairk angry like was fuel to create yami Marik by the rod. Consider Prsit Seto history, the rod was taint by his betary toward the Pharoah, leaving all the Gravekeeper to fall into darkness.

They did have drawbacks. All 7 milennium items have a mind of their own and will disobey and abuse anyone they consider unworthy.

Shadi was a ghost possessing his items, so the scale and key were essentially using themselves. They get a pass

It make unfair things for Yugi inner spirit to be a hero but for Bakura and Maria’s inner spirit to be a villan

The creator was as pure as they come so it makes sense that not all of them were truly cursed.

Necklace gives you a predetermined destiny and you can't sway no matter what.

It's safe to assume that the scales and key have a side effect, but shadi understands them.

The rod was a weapon that only it's wielder would know about.

The necklace did have a huge drawback that made it's wearer heavily reliant on it thus why Ishizu lost and overlooked Kaiba's ancient heritage.

The scale and key however we didn't get to see very much of. As Shadi had been the keepers of both items. But as he was already gone by the time he was introduced due to Yami Bakura, there's no telling if using them had any adverse effects on people.

- Rod: amplifies the darkness inside of you as you're controlling minds (Dark Marik is the greatest example) and has a hidden dagger.
- Millenium key: you can see inside a person's mind and heart, that includes the darkness that ATTACKS you (Shadi nearly got killed by a trap inside Atem's mind and his ancestor nearly died by Bakura's darkness)
- Necklace: you see everything in the future, including your own suffering and how you die.
- Scale: one of the worst, you're unable to say a lie as the scale will ATTACK you for being unfaithful.

They are cursed, the rod amplifies your dark desires, the necklace causes you to become dependent on its power, the key can cause you to lose yourself within the mind of another, asfor the scale im not sure but im sure it probably does something inconvenient

Though the eye ring and rod are enhancing the evil in people's minds and bring it to the outside that's why Pegasus was the first antagonist

The rod eye and ring are the dark items with the ring having the most darkness the scales necklace and key are light and the puzzle has a balance of both.

What are the millennium items made of. We see the spirit of massacred villagers when Atem and his cort assault Thief King Bakura and his Ba Diabound. So would that mean that it was the dule energy of the 99 sacrificed villagers that was transmutated into a solid smelteted with gold?
