So then contrary to popular belief, the real problem isn't the (or any) platform, it's the record labels "pimping out their artists" on these platforms and not giving them a fair share of the cut thanks to contracts and legal jargon. Title should be called "Musicians Talking About Record Labels Screwing Them w/ Streaming Services"...but clickbait, you know....

David said it perfectly, it's not spotify ripping you off, it's the record labels.

I admit I use streaming services but honestly I still love the feel of actually going out and buying the actual CD and owning it

I was born in 71 and when I eventually started buying albums, I would always end up pissed that I spent so much money on a bundle of songs where less than half were worth listening to. I was thrilled when digital downloads became a thing. I could buy what I liked without wasting money on songs I'd never listen to. I love streaming music because it lets me discover new music I would have never found before. I do think that artists should be receiving more money per stream than they currently receive.

Spotify, YouTube etc have allowed me to listen to so many obscure artists I would never have even heard of if I was still relying on radio and TV.

But that doesn't give them an excuse to not pay the artists properly. The problem is definitely with these companies (including both streaming platforms and record lables) and their greed, not the consumer and artists.

Spotify absolutely has some issues to work on, but I can’t even imagine all that I’ve discovered and enjoyed listening to through them

Me as young metalhead (18) I'd never find such great bands without spotify tbh

Lars' interview praising Spotify was in 2013. Metallica launched Blackened Recordings in 2012. Their own record label. They own their own music. That cut out the need for record label negotiations or revenue splits with a label, etc. Lars was extremely innovative at the time to start their own label and obtain rights to everything. He prepared for the future. Fast forward to nowadays, Metallica’s music was streamed 1.3 billion times on Spotify in 2021, the 3rd year in a row they exceeded 1 billion streams.

Using Spotify has led to me buying loads more records than I ever would have without it due to being able to show me similar artists to the ones I like already, who I also buy on vinyl.

If music wasn't as accessible as it is these days, I wouldn't have ever gotten into metal.

90's : cassettes are killing the music industry
2000 : Napster is killing the music industry
2012 : Torrent is killing the music industry
2022 : Spotify is killing the music industry

10% of the music I listen to now on Spotify, I bought the record for as a kid. 50% of the music I listen to I bought the tape. 80% of the music I listen to I bought the CD. 100% of the music I listen to I bought from a "reputable" service that wasn't supported when I had to get my next phone. I don't feel guilty about the fact that I just rent my music from Spotify.

It's so sad how the music industry has decided
Rock music was on the decline and now it's getting worse
Most of the labels won't even sign the next big thing they want people who are active on social media
I m glad that famous musicians are coming against it
But I don't think it's gonna go away

Draiman is 100% correct. It all comes down to who owns the rights to the music. If the label owns them, the artist is going to get screwed no matter what the contract says. Neil Young sold his stake in his music to Nile Rogers, what Nile does with that music is not up to Young. So Nile pulled the music from Spotify, compared to other artists, 6 million streams is not much at all in the grand scheme of things.

Billy Corgan and David Draiman nailed it and that's exactly what the issue is. The labels being greedy just like they always have been.

I've been finding new artists through YouTube. When I find a band I like, I go and buy their album because I like to support artists.

For me nothing will ever replace actually holding the CD/album or whatever in your hands While looking at the art and listening to the music.

Gene Simmons never fails to disappoint. When he said that streaming services we’re going to kill the next Beatles. I almost fell out of my chair.

I love the feel of an Vinyl album or a cd. Part of the reason I may buy a bands album is because of the artwork and the inner notes. You do not get that with streaming.
