Austria wasn’t as unstable as people western books would make you think. Yeah, the Balkan part of the empire was pretty unstable, but the Hungarians, and Austrians and even the transelvianians found a balance, and were united almost unwaveringly under the emperor. WW1 was an unholy miscalculation that single handedly doomed an empire that was starting to fix it internal issues.

I few times wondered.. was it that worth to have the small areas with another minority?

Beeing the emperor i would be trying to somehow reduce the unnessesary.

Like I would give Italy the small Italian areas why not if it would keep them ally of atleast out of war. Maybe not just give but allow them to buy it for decent friendly prize.

Same with the polish-ukrainian part. I would gladly give up on that if Germany or Russia want it. That territory add two minorities and is located behind all that mountain mass around Hungary… making it hard to take care and easy to invade.
Maybe we could get again some Money from that or maybe specific deals idk .. if we give it to Russia.. maybe Russia can invade romania and give us Romania for exchange.
And because we already have romanians inside it would add to the mess.

Anyway giving up on small parts it could be quite fair Union of 4 with Germans in west, Hungarians in east, one group of slavs North and one group of slavs south.
That would be managable.
Borders would be perfectly copiing mountains around Hungary and czechia from east to north, alps protect it from west, south is protected too balkan is full of mountains and donau streams.
Fondu would be Great navgable river connecting many main points and close to every province. Also it would not be a LANDLOCKED country cuz of access to the adriatic sea.
Perfection almost.

If there should be an area to expand territory it should be balkan. Adding some more south slavs or romanians wouldnt make it much worse.
This way they could control whole Donau. And with it all access from it to the black sea. They could have Bulgarians to have the rest and have a strong ally in south.
Beeing still ally with Germany and okay with Italy only real outside thread could be Russia. But have Central powers been succesfull - AustriaHungary could border German puppet states instead of Russia and so be completely safe.
And like i said. The internal situation would not be that much complicated .. if they make some reforms of course giving the north and south slavs more rights.. not just hungarians.

Austria-Hungary didn't collapse in WW1, it was partitioned.
