Yoshi's voice is really iconic, right? But go back to the 1990s, and Yoshi had a totally different, and also very iconic voice! So, why did Nintendo change Yoshi's voice - and where did his original voice from Super Mario World even come from? Let's answer the question of why Yoshi doesn't sound like he used to!

I think when we think of Yoshi, we all immediately think of his iconic voice from Mario is Missing where he racks up tons of globulator miles looking for him

I did NOT expect the blauw sound to literally sound like how you described it

I always assumed the sound in Super Mario World Isn't Yoshi's voice but it's just the sound effect of you jumping on him. I always just thought his saddle was squeaky or something

As someone that grew up with Yoshi, both the 90s sound and the modern one are instantly recognizable “yoshi” sounds to me

10:12 that "WoOah" is iconic even without the pitch shift

6:59 it is really funny to hear as a german because he is saying "blau" perfectly pronounced which means "blue"

As a music producer finding out yoshi's sound is made from an orchestra hit + pitch bend is just pure gold. I'm going to make that

*SUCH a cute topic.*

I love how much care people give to little subjects like this.

Totaka's voice lines are so perfect that Nintendo's still using his clips after 25+ years, that's peak character sound design!

I never knew that Yoshi's voice was pitched up. I always thought it was recorded as is

Interestingly, in Super Mario Galaxy 2, even though Yoshi uses his updated voice, he makes the classic voice when Mario takes a seat on his saddle!

There was one game that used both Kondo's soundss and Totaka's voice: Yoshi's Island on the GBA. In that game, Totaka's voice replaced most of Yoshi's sounds from the SNES game, EXCEPT the sound Yoshi makes when you retrieve Baby Mario, onto Yoshi's back.

I love that the eating noise went from an orchestra hit to “ba-dum”. Easily my fav Yoshi noise aside from their Pokémon like tendency to say their own name.

absolutely blows my mind that the classic Yoshi voice is just 2 notes of an electronic synth voice

I did not realize that classic sound effect was supposed to be an actual sound Yoshi was making with his mouth.

I never thought of the original yoshi sound as a voice until you played the clips at 3:22, I thought it was just a sound to indicate mario now riding on yoshi

we all agree that yoshi is singlehandedly the cutest character in the mario movie
