One thing I like to do is make a chord, I'll take the 3rd and move it up an octave, the 5th down an octave, then play with the notes between to get fuller sounding chords.

Learning how to work with your relative or perfect pitch also gets you really far. Looking into all genres and how every note is connected is also very important. I don’t listen to choir music often, but it has helped me realize that how you phrase your baseline and other things can totally change the feeling and vibe.
