Honestly up until Misa suggested Taco Bell the inner monologues were not out of place at all. Misa threw them for such a loop they began panicking, looking way too deep for hidden meanings. Brilliant.

It's easy to miss, but Light asking for a more expensive meal than the treat he's being offered is a subtle indication that the Death Note has turned him into a monster. This is the scene in which he truly becomes Kira.
