With a bandage on his right ear, former President Trump arrived at Day 1 of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday. It's Trump's first public appearance since the attempted assassination two days earlier at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. There, Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire, killing one person and injuring two others in addition to Trump. He was then killed by Secret Service personnel.

Trump also revealed Monday that Ohio GOP Senator JD Vance will be his running mate (VP) during the 2024 election cycle.

Let me just preface what I’m going to say with a few things.

I’m not American, nor am I a fan of Trump (or Biden for that matter).

I always found Trump funny and entertaining, but I saw him as more of a TV character. I never felt like I could connect to him in any way because he comes across as very self obsessed and cold to me. He didn’t feel “real” for lack of a better term.

However, I found myself actually getting emotional while watching this. This is the first time Trump ever felt like a real person to me.

I can only imagine the rollercoaster of emotions he must be feeling. A deep fear of being out in public again, an undeniable sense of humility after narrowly avoiding death and then, to top it off an immense wave of gratitude from the tsunami of love being given to him by the crowd.

That, combined with the music, the shots of his son teary eyed and his commitment to be in public, even when he’s clearly feeling fear, was immensely powerful.

This was truly a cinematic moment in American History.
