Drevniy teatr byl postroyen v kontse IV veka do n. e., okolo 340-300 gg. do n. e., arkhitektorom Polikletom Mladshim. Pri maksimal'noy vmestimosti ot 13 000 do 14 000 zriteley, v teatre prokhodili muzykal'nyye, pevcheskiye i dramaticheskiye igry. Segodnya pamyatnik privlekayet bol'shoye kolichestvo grecheskikh i inostrannykh posetiteley i ispol'zuyetsya dlya postanovki antichnykh dramaticheskikh p'yes. Pervym sovremennym predstavleniyem, provedennym v teatre, byla tragediya Sofokla «Elektra». V 1955 godu oni byli uchrezhdeny kak yezhegodnoye meropriyatiye dlya predstavleniya antichnoy dramy. Epidavrskiy festival' prodolzhayetsya i segodnya i provoditsya v letniye mesyatsy. V ramkakh Epidavrskogo festivalya vystupali izvestnyye grecheskiye i inostrannyye aktery, v tom chisle grecheskaya soprano Mariya Kallas.

The ancient theatre was built at the end of the 4th century BC, around 340-300 BC, by the architect Polykleitos the Younger. With a maximum capacity of 13,000 to 14,000 spectators, the theatre hosted musical, singing and dramatic plays.
Today, the monument attracts a large number of Greek and foreign visitors and is used for staging ancient dramatic plays. The first modern performance held in the theatre was Sophocles' tragedy Electra.
In 1955, they were established as an annual event for the presentation of ancient drama. The Epidaurus Festival continues today and is held during the summer months.

Famous Greek and foreign actors have performed as part of the Epidaurus Festival, including the Greek soprano Maria Callas.
