She was an Indiana class pre-Dreadnought battleship designed for coastal defense. At the time, she was considered comparable to foreign coastal defense battleships.

Important to note this is not the USS Massachusetts in WW2, which is in my opinion the best battleship still in existence, its a fantastic museum ship in its namesake state of Massachusetts.

The issue is you are looking at the ship from a modern eye
The turret explosion was a secondary battery, not a primary unit
The needing to refuel -- they used coal at the time and that has to be loaded slowly and they had been traveling over 30 days at that point
Also it was designed as a coastal defense ship -- or a secondary battleship
Finally it was an Indiana class pre dreadnought class which was only the 4th battleship the US created -- the Maine and New York as testbed and the previous named Indiana (BB-1) so they loaded it with weapons as was the theory for the day

I think it is needlessly misleading to use graphics depicting such modern warships when talking about this topic. It will only muddy people's understanding of naval history. An already poorly understood area.

I guess sail ships wouldn't count as battleships otherwise the Wasa would be top of my list. A giant ship made with too many gundecks and not enough ballast and sank before it even left the harbor on its maiden voyage.
