2014 Toyota Yaris SE Test Drive & Small Car Video Review

Under the hood is a 1.5 liter 4-cylinder that makes 106 horsepower and 103 lb-ft. of torque. You get either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission, both of which seem a decade behind the times. The fuel economy estimates are good at 30 MPG in the city and 37 MPG on the highway.

The Yaris only comes as a hatchback for the 2014 model year. This compact small car is lacking in rear cargo storage room. The backseat however is not too shabby when it comes to space. This being an entry level car, the interior materials are not going to be anything special. But surprisingly the Yaris is pretty nice.

The Nissan Versa has more interior room, the Chevy Spark is more fun to drive, and the Mitsubishi Mirage gets better fuel economy. All these cars also cost less than the Yaris. But you can bank on Toyota reliability and build quality.

I purchased a 2008 Yaris new. Ive been driving it now for six years now. Its been the most dependable car ive ever owned. Its fun to drive and plan on keeping it for a long time.

Never thought I'd see the day where someone recommends a Mitsubishi and a Chevy over a Toyota

This is what you call a review, not like the other reviewers on Autobytel that try to make a sales pitch.

Thumbs up

I own 2013 Toyota Yaris LE, gas is good, I've drove it on up to the mountain in I never had problem with, and we were pack in the car, plus 100qrt of ice box ok the trunk. With my experience on the Yaris, I loved it. Own one before you comment about it..

I bought a brand new automatic 5 door 2014 Yaris YRS hatchbatch nearly 6 six years ago. I'm in Australia.

My controls aren't like the car he's reviewing here - They are very smooth to operate and I love the addition of the volume up/down buttons on the steering wheel. Visually, I loved the range of colours and the body that Toyota chose for this model and it's sad that my colour (Cosmopolitan) only stuck around for a few years before being removed from their product lines. It's pink, but not screamingly pink or childlishly pink.

I haven't racked up a ton of kms - Almost 60, 000. In this time, I've only had to replace an air conditioning filter (supplied free with my capped price servicing), a windshield wiper (also covered by capped price servicing) and a set of tyres.

My advice: Don't hesitate if you want a car that'll take care of itself, reliable, cheap on parts and if you live in the city - Even better. The fuel economy is very nice even if you drive in stop-start traffic.

What's with these Autobytel reviews ? I have yet to find one that has mostly credible information.

I'm a cheap car expert and this "Cheap car expert" is wrong. This car is the definition of value for money.

If you're on a budget and cannot replace your car often, this is the way to go for reliability, durability and the fact that you don't pay extra for the hatchback design, the outgoing sedan really made no sense to me at all.

I like this guy. Very fun to watch even with supposedly boring discussions and very informative as well! You'd make a great salesman, sir!

I have a 2009 Yaris @ 0% it was the cheapest car I could get at the time. I love my Yaris with a 5 speed manual, it is fun to drive. I paid mine off and decided to keep driving it, when I decide to get another I will probably get another one. The however part of this is, from a practical stand point the Fit is a much more sophisticated piece of engineering. The interior is huge, unfortunately I have quirky taste in looks and I prefer the looks of the Yaris. My daughter has a Fit, I would recommend the Fit for most people who want the economy and practicality. You have to go climb around in both to see what I mean, the fit is huge.

In Europe, the top model (Dynamic) had dual zone climate control, 6 speed gearbox, rearview camera, sat nav standard, auto dim interior mirror, etc. Hard to image the SE in the US lacked all that.

I understand his angle. But, let's be fair. We can't really have it all in one package. We can't have an inexpensive car that gets compact fuel economy, has sports car handling, has luxury car comfort,  estate car cargo space, and feels expensive. It's just not possible.

This car seems designed for someone who is on the fence as to whether go new or used. And with this car, you are getting Toyota's badge of reliability.

OK, I can't BELIEVE Toyota hasn't upgraded this model to a really good 6-speed auto, or CVT as the fuel economy numbers would be much better than even now!!!
