Ingenuity helicopter on Mars damages rotor blade, and is no longer able to fly #shorts

Sadly the Ingenuity helicopter (aka Ginny) on Mars has damaged its rotor blade and can no longer fly. Originally designed to be a proof of concept and undergo just 5 flights on Mars, it’s now completed 72 in nearly 3 years and flown 14 times further than anyone ever planned, helping the Perseverance rover (aka Percy) pick out routes across the Martian surface. Here’s to the next helicopter mission in the Solar System: Dragonfly, which will launch in 2028 to visit Saturn’s largest moon Titan.

Sucks it’s gone. But just like most NASA missions it far acceded its original goals.

We must plan a rescue mission to go fix its little wing

Gotta show serious respect to the engineers who have worked on all the different Mars rovers and such. They’ve managed to send numerous devices to Mars whose missions have last far longer than design parameters required and have returned much more bang for the buck than anyone could or should have expected.

It hit a Martian aircraft no doubt. Or a giant martian cat hit it down. Cats are like that, they're bastards

Someday, on Mars, in the EXACT SPOT, there's gonna be a display case with the lil guy. Mars kids will get to see it on field trips, and us old guys will buy the model kit at the gift shop. 🤠🐈

I helped test the new rotor blades. Before the test we hung something like 300 lbs from the blade (made of just a couple layers of carbon fiber and foam) and it held just fine. Incredible how strong they are

Gotta give credit where credit is due .... when it comes to designing these probes and telescopes and other technology that the designers/developers at NASA have come up with, deserve a huge "thumbs up". Their creations have outlasted their original intention, being able to provide such historical discoveries ... both Voyagers, Cassini, Ingenuity, Hubble and more.

Every flight of Ingenuity was a gift. Thank you, Ginny, you were the best!

NASA are creating the must-see exhibits of the first Martian Museum, Ingenuity, Opportunity, also shoutouts to ESA's Beagle 2. Martian history is being made in our lifetime, it's glorious.

It did more than it’s life expectancy was so we gained more, everything over in which we’ve had was an extended bonus + another mission we can learn from the knowledge and have an updated version that can go for longer and more adventurers research missions. It was all a great experience and success

I hope it makes it to a museum here on earth in my lifetime.

Like watching the entire duration of the Cassini mission, you know the end will come someday, but you are just never ready for it. It brings a nagging sadness, like the loss of an old friend who beat all odds and delivered AMAZING work. RIP, my dear friend.
