Hi everyone!

One of the most frequently asked questions that I get are, ‘how do Business Analysts, Scrum Masters, and Product Owners get assigned to projects? Do Business Analysts typically need to work on a Business Case for the project? ‘And the answer is, generally, it depends. Business Analyst/Scrum Master or Product Owners might need to work on a Business Case depending on the organization'.

A business case completed before a project is officially labeled as a project, and it is done to understand the project benefits. It is a way for companies to understand which one—compared to a list of many—will provide the company the most benefit to work on. Components in a business case usually include:

- Contribution to Business
- Options Considered (Buy, Build)
- Benefits
- Timeframe of Project
- Cost of Project
- Expected Rate of Investment (ROI)
- Risks

After the leadership/management have had an opportunity to evaluate all the business cases across many departments, they are able to determine which projects can move forward. Once they are approved, they are assigned to the Project Manager/Business Analyst or Product Owner/Scrum Master.
