HOW I NAIL FOCUS with CAMERA MOVEMENT | Handheld Manual Focus

Today I'll show you how I nail focus in camera when taking handheld videos. Believe it or not, I used manual focus for the entire epic handheld b roll" sequence!

Intention is everything, it pays to take a little time to block a shot and when you do that properly and all marks are hit, the results are perfection. I was really impressed with your skills on this one. The quick burst camera movements with speed ramps means you really have to nail that focus for when the time comes to slow down the footage for dramatic impact.

I use peaking as a ball park and, I use that focus zoom religiously to zero in, just like you. Best way, do that enough and it becomes pretty effective.

I shoot adoption videos for an animal rescue... believe me, if you want to get better at manual focus, practice shooting dogs and cats. They're unpredictable and force you to learn how to quickly make adjustments and utilize your depth of field. I had to learn to focus manually on those shoots because my GH5's had such terrible autofocus, especially with subjects that move quickly, like animals; their firmware updates have helped the AF somewhat.

I used to do a lot of focus pulling work, so I'm a bit bias when I say I prefer manual focusing, but as autofocus gets better with each new year, eventually it'll be a 'what works best in each scenario' type of thing. Great video, planning ahead is so important for most shoots!
