*ABOUT*
Occupied and disputed territories are flashpoints in world politics. Until the mid-20th century, sustained military control led to recognition of the occupier’s sovereignty. However, conflicts now last for decades. International law is vague. And equitable solutions are often in short supply. Rather than developing consistent standards that apply across all occupied and disputed territories, the U.S. and other countries have wielded a spotty, case-by-case approach that often singles out Israel for opprobrium, while giving others a free pass.

The conversation featured Svante Cornell, Director of the American Foreign Policy Council’s Central Asia-Caucasus Institute, and Brenda Shaffer, Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University’s Center on Eurasian, Russian, and East Europe Studies. Jonathan Schanzer, FDD’s Senior Vice President for Research, moderated.
