When mercedes bought out the company back in the early 2000s

They intended for it to be a competitor to Mini, which was also a small economy sporty brand by BMW.

While BMW succeeded with 100s of thousands of Minis sold, Mercedes barely could get out one model from Smart before claiming bankruptcy in the North American market in 2017.
