"Them Romes" Lyrics
Well the first guy committed suicide, (Gordian I)
When he found out his co-ruler, son died. (Gordian II)
Then they were succeeded by, these guys. (Pupienus and Balbinus)
And they were in charge three months!

But then they got killed by, Praetorians,
And the next guy had a pretty, good run. (Gordian III)
But he died in battle or by, treason
And that’s just the first six years!

The next Emperor died-fighting, this dude, (Philip I "The Arab" vs. Decius)
Who battled with the Goths and, got chewed, (Decius)
Then- his son took over which, was shrewd, (Herennius Etruscus)
But then he died of plague!

The next one got murdered by his, own men, (Trebonianus Gallus)
Two months later it happened, again, (Aemilianus)
And then came Emperor, Valerian
Captured by the Sassanids!

Well Valerian was forced to drink, hot gold,
Or skinned alive, depending how the, tale’s told.
His son ruled fifteen years then, got trolled (Gallienus)
It’s conspiracy murder again!

His successor died of plague after, one year, (Claudius II "Gothicus")
And who killed the next guy is, unclear, (Quintillus)
But things evened out because, no fear,
Here comes Aurelian!

"The big problem was that the Roman Empire was too big."

My high school history teacher had this theory he called The Rubber Band Theory to explain why empires collapse. As he put it to us: "The more you stretch a rubber band, the weaker you make it until it eventually snaps."

And he was right.

I really wish you would've gone more in-depth on Probus (276-282), he doesn't get nearly enough recognition for completing Aurelian's legacy. Without Probus stabilising Rome's soft-power over the Germanic tribes, reintroducing viticulture to the empire after a two-hundred year ban, keeping Aurelian's economy alive and taking the unprecedented measure of employing the army in public works (including finishing the Aurelian walls, which Aurelian had left incomplete!), we would probably think of Aurelian, at best, as an overly ambitious general with unrealistic goals. It's good that Aurelian gets credit, but Probus should get his due as well.

The perfect balance of good illustration, animation, and history all in one. As a professional artist/illustrator as well as somebody who has a degree in history… These videos are so well done I feel they are almost criminally underrated. Fantastic job EH! I think Rob deserves a raise… Just saying

Can't wait to hear about sweet, innocent Diocletian and how he didn't usurp power from others.

"Get paid to make someone the emperor, then kill him and get paid to make someone else the emperor. Repeat" sounds like an exploit in a strategy game.

Yes! One of my favorite Extra History episodes is getting the Complete Treatment! Now I just need to wait for Tulip Mania: Complete, and my life will be "complete."

...Well, _I_ thought it was funny.

My upcoming D&D campaign has a quote: "despite his active hand in splitting the two halves of the Rumpan Empire, late in life Dioretian frequently found that he missed the Porcelain Throne, and its glory."

Okay, I should have expected that visual gag with the Goths. As soon as I saw it I had a good laugh, and then they did it again and got me once more. Well played Nick, well played.
