Van Gogh's travels informed the works we revere today.

Famous for chopping off a piece of his ear in a fit and delivering it to a woman in a brothel, Vincent van Gogh is remembered for his ailing mental health and the many paintings—over 900— he created during his lifetime. Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in the village of Zundert in the Netherlands.

During his lifetime, Van Gogh’s work had little value to no value in the art world; but a century later, the first version of Van Gogh’s Portrait of Dr. Gatchet sold for $82.5 million in 1990 (around $159 million today). Van Gogh heavily financially-dependent on his younger brother Theo van Gogh. Though the relationship was strained at times, both brothers corresponded with each through hundreds of letters over the years.

Well-known paintings such as The Starry Night, Cafe at Night, andWheat Field with Crows were created within a two-year period before his death in July 1890. It was the same wheat field Van Gogh painted in June, that’d he go to shoot himself in the chest.

Though Vincent van Gogh lived a short and destitute life, he created some of the most revered paintings today.

I just hate how some people use him to romanticise this depressed starving tragic artist trope, listen, he did not create his art because of his depression, he created it DESPITE it, his best work and most productive years were when he was at the asylums getting treatment and feeling better, so stop romanticising depression and mental illness in general but especially when it comes to art because a lot of young artists will either be discouraged or worst of all turn to some kind of substance abuse in order to embody this tragic artist trope

Van Gogh's story is fascinating and tragic

this seemed like a short introduction of a longer video. nice, but with Van Gogh there's so much more to talk about that I don't think this video really does justice to his life

"You took your life, as lovers often do. But I could've told you Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you."

Wish this had more of a discussion of Van Gogh's artistry and what makes him so important and influential

It's sad how artists like him never got recognized in his time yet singers who have absolutely no talent get to live in mansions and ride private jets

Vincent Van Gogh has been the most...touching person to me. Throughout all of the horrible things I've gone through, at such a young age, his work, his story and his letters, everything has pushed me to be greater as an artist. I love oil painting, and I hope to be like him one day. It honestly hurts me to know he thought he was a loser when he died. I wish I could tell him how much his work has done for me. Thank you Vincent :)

He was too intelligent for his own good. A true genius.

His paranoia and depression got to him on the account of him licking his brush (the paint contained lead) and him not getting proper recognition. He is one of the most interpreted men of all time, and will be remembered as a legend.

One of my favorite artists. When the Interactive Van Gogh Exhibit came to my area last year we went. It was one of the most incredible and memorable experiences of my life.
