Something I heard recently is to use the word 'nevertheless'. Say your excuse then say, "Nevertheless, I'm going to do xyz because..." and then state why it's good or important to do. This has helped me a lot in simplifying. Today, for example, "I am feeling ill and the baby is sick, nevertheless I went through a shelf of books because it felt good to accomplish something and I could sit on the floor doing it so it didn't take too much energy."

Definitely a process! I once heard someone comment on how there are so many rituals to bring things into the house (birthdays, Christmas, weekly shopping trips, etc..) but few to none to get things out of the house. This is very true so I try to ritualize it. 40 bags in 40 days each year during Lent and weekly trips to donate, etc. It took a few years to get to “maintenance” for us, but we are here and it is great!

This sounds so cheesy and maybe it’s just the pregnancy hormones but this video was so encouraging that it almost made me emotional watching it! Love your videos, Dawn. You’re so real. Thank you!

I find it amazing that after I declutter an area, I come back and want it even more simplified, after decluttering my bedroom closet and clothes about 3 times, it now looks awesome and I'm excited to get dressed to go out because everything I have, I love!

I have been inspired by you. I tell anyone who will listen about you and how I started my journey for minimalism by emptying the drawers on either side of my stove. Do you know that I had 5 turkey basting brushes! Probably bought on every time I made a turkey and never threw out the old one! That’s crazy! The other drawer was for craving knives, I laid them all out and I’m embarrassed to say that I had 18 knives! Not even steak knives! Theses were carving knifes! The thing is... I opened that drawer daily and rummaged around looking for my favorite knives and it didn’t even occur to me that there was something wrong with having 18 knives in that drawer!! This has been an eye opener for me. I’m cleaning out and loving it!🥰

I find when I am stuck with decluttering I tell myself I only need to get rid of one item a day. Even if it's a paperclip or a match, it counts. Of course I usually end up getting rid of more and it just keeps the momentum going instead of grinding to a halt. Sometimes it just helps to take the pressure off.

I just love the feeling of release that you get from letting go of ‘stuff’.
I had about 100 books (and growing!) sitting on my bookcase in my ‘waiting to be read’ pile. When I realised that I only read about 25 books per year I thought I will never catch up and the pile will keep growing and its a chain round my neck saying “ read faster!!!!”.... nagging and pushing me and making me feel
so I looked at those books and got rid of all the ones I could borrow from the library or friends and that left me with about 30 books. Much better! Now I’m in control and not the books!! 😃😃😃

Can I JUST tell you that I absolutely and genuinely love you. Each time you post a video I get comfortable and I watch to the end. I love the content you gather and the form in which you share.

You inspire me DAILY. And God is my witness on that.

Thank you!

I lost almost all of my possessions in a bad breakup last year. I was so hurt and broken over it until I started watching your videos, Dawn. I accepted that owning less doesn't have to be hard/stigmatized/sad. I have embraced minimalism for me and my kids and have downsized more than I ever would have thought. It has changed my life in ever way! Thanks for your weekly videos to keep me motivated 😊

I cannot express how happy I am that I have found your videos. I've only watched a few. I found you less than 48 hours ago and I have already decluttered and organized my kitchen and have seen a HUGE difference. You have lit a FIRE 🔥 in me that I have tried lighting for the past 5 years. I'm excited to go through my entire house!! I need this lifestyle and for some reason, your words and ideas/tips have spoken to me in a way that so many others haven't been able to. I have 3 kids and one on the way, twin almost 4 yr old boy and a 2 yr old boy and it's been such a struggle to keep up with the house. This is going to CHANGE MY LIFE 💕💕💕💕💕 I know great things are only to come and I am so excited about it. I love the changes I've already seen. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making these videos and taking the time to do it. Every day I wake up excited to be a minimalist. Thank you ❤️

Victim vs player. So simple, yet it hit me between the eyes this morning! I often find myself explaining (excusing) why things happen/don’t happen. I need to take ownership, not make excuses!

I needed to hear this today! ❤️ Love your channel!!!

Thank you Dawn! You asked who my inspiration was you are my inspiration Joshua Becker. So this morning I looked around my tiny apartment and I have piles and piles of laundry and Christmas bins and just stuff stuff stuff everywhere clothing everywhere my closet is jam packed in anyways I took pictures of everything this morning. So after I do some clearing and cleaning I can look back at the pictures and say wow what an improvement. Thank you so much keep up the good work

Hi Dawn! I’m Dawn too! I’m a 5’ 3” powerlifting momma of 4; 7 yo twin girls and 2 grown stepdaughters. I just discovered your channel today and have been binge watching ever since. Lol.
I’ve been decluttering my house. It feels like an uphill battle some days with 2 ADHD little girls, ADHD myself, and both of of us putting over 40 hours a week at work. It’s slow going, but I see the progress and it’s exciting.

I completely agree with your comment about things being put in perspective when something bad happens to a loved one. Last year my mum had a stroke and we were visiting her in hospital. Sitting on that hospital bed with my mum, dad and sister, that's when it clicked for me...nothing else matters except 'we are together'. Since then my life has grown so much and my minimalism journey is bettering my life in so many ways. Thanks for your inspiration ❤️

Great points! I recently had an epiphany about clothes. We usually look at our clothes thinking "That's cute, I like the way I look in this, this is stylish/comfortable/etc" but what is the PURPOSE of our closet? It's a place to keep the things we need, so that on any given day we have something appropriate to wear for whatever the day holds. That's really it. Anything more is just what a consumerism culture wants us to buy into.

I agree with everything. I have never missed anything I ever donated. Painful to let go in the moment maybe but lo g term:easy! And discovering mini alism feels like I've learned the secret to how I can feel like I'm staying at a hotel always. Luxury without having to be rich or spend a lot

Please post more videos EXACTLY LIKE THIS ONE. I've decided to pair decluttering with your videos playing in the background for encouragement. Most days I just ignore the mess because I'm so overwhelmed, but today I decided to pair the dreaded task of decluttering with the fun of one of your videos and your words kept me going and believing I could do it. Thank you very much!
