I have been asked many times what should be done with the existing basement wall insulation wrap that many new homes have pre-installed when finishing off the basement. This video is in response to these questions.

The issue I'm worried about is the fiberglass behind the face coming in contact with the concrete. Doesn't this pose an issue for mold and mildew growth?

I had to remove all of that style insulation from my basement walls because of moisture or musty smell in the basement. I pulled it off the walls and there was moisture trapped behind it. Not sure if it was because of not being sealed with tape properly or what, but I removed it and will be installing normal insulation in the walls. Following your framing videos are very helpful

Keep it and if you have to slice it open to make the code officers happy it won't hurt it, then insulate your new framed exterior walls with R-13 fiberglass vapor faced insulation this will get you past your energy/insulation inspection and have you ready for drywall!

Thanks for the great video. I'm planning to finish my basement soon and I have this kind of insulation wrap. All the seams are taped, but it has me wondering, how is it truly a vapor barrier if the tops and bottoms are open?

My builder only did the top half of my basement in this. Should I do the bottom half and tape them together? What kind of tape if so? Thanks.

So if you have this insulation already there when you frame… do you have to put more insulation inside the new framing? So you have double insulation then? Thanks awesome info and videos!

I have the same wall wrap. when my basement was framed the studs are pressed against the wrap. My question is can I add more insulation by removing the wrap in between the studs and add faced fiberglass insulation on top of it or should I leave it alone and just drywall it up? Can I use rock wool safe and sound over my wrap. My studs was framed about 2” away from the wall I think.

Have a new house being built right now that uses this wall-wrap blanket stuff. We are holding off on finishing the basement until later, because we can get it done for far less than the builder. I'll be doing the design work, so this was really helpful for me. Now I can figure out what sort of space I'm actually working with.

Where exactly could I get that wrap and how would I apply it to my insulation in my basement. Also what’s the exact sort of name of the wrap in case I wanted to purchase it?

Hi. Useful video. My home has this wall wrap installed. However a section of it has drooped as the fastener cap has come off. Is this a repair a homeowner can do? Where can the fasteners be purchased? The fasteners on my system, at a glance, looks the same as the ones used in your video. Thanks!

What would you recommend for people who have this insulation but also need to put in horizontal fireblock every 10’? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Eddie,

When insulating the new wall cavities against the blanket wrap, can you use roxul safe n sound, or does it have to be a faced fiberglass insulation? Also, if roxul is possible, do you still need to make slits in the existing blanket wrap? Thanks!

Eddie how do you draft/fire block between the insulation wrap and the framed wall?

Eddie, thanks so much for the videos. You’ve helped so many people with them. I am in Florida and have an unfinished basement. Three of the walls are poured concrete and the one rear wall is wood frame as part of a walkout basement. I know you’re up in the Northeast, but can you advise if I need any kind of vapor barrier on the three poured concrete walls in the basement or can I just build the walls and use R13 like you show on the videos? Thanks so much Eddie.

Hello i am currently in the process of finishing my basement. I have the same insulation in my basement as in your video, but it stops roughly 1 - 1 1/2 ft from the bottom of the basement. When i add new insulation do i insulate all the way to the floor and would i add unfaced batt over the top ?

If you leave the wrap up and push your fire blocking up against it sandwiching against the foundation, I assume that’s okay rather than removing it to have a better seal?
