You forgot the part where they built the portal in the shape of the Warden, almost like they worshipped it for saving them, only to realize the true danger is presented.

I liked Alan Becker's depiction of the lore behind the Warden, where it was actually a protector of the ancient cities.

The real lore: the ancient builders discovers the wither, so they went underground to take cover. They discovers skulk, a natural substance that feeds ioff the souls of the dead. They built an athe ancient city’s and experimented with the skulk and eventualy started sacrifices to the skulk. When enough souls and bones of the dead were fed to the skulk, it created a blind, extremely strong beast that we now call, the warden. The wthen when the wither finally got to the ancient city’s, the warden emerged from the ground and deafeated the wither. It only attacks us players now, because it’s protecting the city.

This theory is interesting, as I've been trying to find out the lore to it. Minecraft's lore is VERY hidden, with mainly the landscape being the clues to the lore and the players pretty much deciding most of it in a way that doesn't ruin it, and that's what I love about the lore to the game. The trailer says something like, "this is where you can craft your own story. The only limit is your imagination." And despite the lore to the game, it still holds that potential.

Fun fact: wardens will not stomp on turtle eggs. You might say that they are blind, and yes, they are. But I put a lot of wardens down and the AI’s code knew it was there for sure because they heard it and walked over it. This make the warden the first hostile mob to not crush turtle eggs

It does have pillager architecture and ALSO when the evoker get mad, he summons things from the ground, it looks like shriekers, so pillagers used to live here. And in one of minecraft’s book, the pillager gets evil in cave.

My theory is that the ancient city people (idk) used the warden as a protector because inside the ancient city it has carpet and some structures of the ancient city have wool and wardens can’t her you walk on wool and they also experimented on skulk because they wanted to see what it was capable of and then built statues of the warden which explained the big “portal” which I think is not a portal and the warden crawling out of the ground I think is the sculk trying to attack anything that is a threat to it so it try’s to make a shape of a beloved mob the axolotl anyway that’s it

actually the pillagers are responsiblebc the spruce wood they use is everywhere and it also explains the amount of wool is down there the pillagers are probably responsible for a lot of the minecraft lore and might be a cult

Close but actually The warden was a man made mob from skulk. they got the skulk from the portal and made the warden with shriekers to activate it for protection against the wither. Only they should have never trusted it.

They built the city in the over world. Notice how dinosaur bones are underground? They were composted and compacted, they weren’t pushed underground. Kind of like the nether. So the ancient city wasn’t always underground.

I have a theory about ancient builders (i dont really know if you already said something that looked like this):
So the ancient builders where explorers that ended up in this world by dimension traveling, so they started building for the things that live in the overworld, nether and end. For each building they would get paid something that could lead them to their world and they made the ancient city with a portal that is made to teleport you to they world. They wanted to make people know they were here, that is why they made the city, and they wanted to show the culture they had, so they created a disk. When they managed to make the portal and lit it, a warden appeared through the portal. The ancient builders managed to scape and break to portal for the warden to not come in again; what they didn’t know was that the warden was taking the souls of every living being he found.
Idk if it has some sense, but i hope it works:)

What about wool in the ancient city
This could explain that some ancient builders went down or stayed there when they found out it's weaknesses 👁️
