Making textured collage papers with the gelli plate

I love to make handmade papers to collage onto my paintings. One of the easiest ways to do this is with a gelli plate. Just a couple of paint colours, some tools for scraping and making circular designs, and a few scraps of paper is all you need to create unique and unpredictable papers to add to your paintings and mixed media work.

Love this! I was in a rut using my gelli plate but your video got me inspired. I got some great results. Thank you!

Thanks, Tamara! It was fun watching you demonstrate the gelli plate. I love your idea of using the catalyst wedge to remove paint from the gelli plate---I may try that on the surface of a painting as well.

This is really inspiring! We just started using the round Gelli plate, and it was hard to stop! I like the idea of quickly creating your own marks with a simple tool. And the small papers were also different. Thanks!

Thank you! Yes I’m obsessed with printing on the Gelli plate. So much fun. The options are endless. So I have an endless stack of papers for collage... 😅. Lots of love from Sweden

Hi Tamara, I just found your channel. I love the work you did here. I am a fan of black and white. I worked with carving linoleum since back in the early 70's. I purchased my first gelli plate for a gift to myself, and for my adult daughter who loves to craft with me. I have dabbled in everything over the years but never tried this. I still have my old brayer and I'm sure your videos will help a lot! I am hoping to create papers for journaling, art cards and greeting cards. Happy New Year, and thanks for the inspiration! These are great prints. I have seen a few artists demo the gelli plate, but nobody mentions how to clean it at the end of a print session. Is it difficult? What does cleaning the plate entail? Id like to understand before i buy one for myself. Thank you. Ill be looking forward to seeing more of your art.

Hi Tamara! I love how your using the wedge to remove paint! I use masks that I cut out of thin cardboard…your technique has a similar effect, but less controlled. Something I’m always looking for! Have you tried pulling your prints with tissue paper or deli paper? They go almost completely transparent when you collage them over a painted surface. 💗
