Oxford dictionary definition of a ‘Battleship’:
“A line-of-battle warship of the largest and most armoured class”

For all of the non-boat guys out there, calling every navy ship a "battleship" is the equivalent of calling every car a "truck"

I'm sure a lot of rubes use "battleship" as a synonym for "warship", just like every armoured vehicle is a "tank".

Battleships are pretty, and sometimes they lose their temper against North Korean artillery

In italy we use "corazzata" armored if translated

I always assumed it just referred to ships intended to directly fight other battleships. Learned something new.

A lot of people who are in the media should watch this, they believe everything warship is a battleship.

This seems to be a problem exclusive problem to some languages like English since the term of a "ship that goes to battle" coincides with a specific class of ships that go to battle. I think this is the case for english, german and italian
In portuguese we call them "Couraçados", roughly cuirass ships, wich makes sense since they were the most armored ships around

As someone who has a degree is navy history for the university of Portsmouth. That would be a in order of appearance, one post dreadnought battleship, One first rate ship of the line, fast cruiser (light) and one guided missile destroyer.

Ships of the line can explain the point as well.
Ships designed to fight in the battleline and go toe to toe with equal opponents.

This strikes me as trying to argue for the sake of arguing. No other reason, which annoys me.

Would I be correct in saying that the word "Battleship" originates from the Line of Battle in old naval terminology?

For the US Navy, large heavily armored ship with 12+ inch main batteries = battleship.

Wrong, a battle ship is a ship that takes 4 hits to sink, duh. 🙄

With that logic a aircraft carrier is a battleship!

The best way to call them is capitals. As they are the center of millitary spending.
