and this is why carrier groups have Awac's with look down radar. So they can detect those missiles a couple hundred miles away.

Remember that in addition to this they also had the Oscar class submarines with the exact same missile load out. Both surface and sub platforms would get their initial targeting data through RORSAT; ocean surveillance satellites which would pick up the speed and direction of the carrier battle group. Of course in text books the missile strike would be launched, AWACs would detect the incoming missiles and F-14/Phoenix interceptors would splash the incoming threat. The 688 attack sub class was designed to sweep ahead of a task group and locate any lurking submarine threat such as the Oscars.
Crucially missing from the Soviet suite was a blue-water capable air threat that could run interference against the Tomcats. There were scenarios where the Soviets could try to exploit restricted waters, surprise and other tricks to overwhelm the task force defences. The size of the missile gave enough space for fuel to give them very long range, radar and other sensors which were upgraded over time, MCG capability, and a very big warhead. At a 1000kg the sheer kinetic energy of that lump hitting almost any ship at the speed the missile would be flying at could achieve a ‘mission kill’ all navies practice damage control to a certain extent, but the damage inflicted by these would instantly sink most warships.

It would probably have not worked 40 years ago and definitely not no at best one might get to a destroyer but you don't have to know much about the US navy to know how many different ways this thing would get taken out

Isn't the Kirov declassified as a submarine now?
