One of the most common questions we receive is does Medicare cover dental procedures or eye exams?

The short answer is that Medicare does not cover most dental care. This includes cleanings, fillings, dentures, extractions and so on. It also does not cover eye exams for eyeglasses or contact lenses.
However, Medicare Part A, inpatient coverage, may cover certain dental services that are related to your inpatient hospital stay. For example, it is not uncommon for your doctor to require an oral exam and treatment before an organ transplant or heart surgery. This may also include emergency or complex dental procedures related to facial cancer, reconstructive surgery and so on. That is covered by Medicare.

Regarding vision, keep in mind that Medicare will cover eye diseases or conditions like cataracts and glaucoma. But it does not cover corrective vision.
Because Medicare does not cover basic dental care, stand-alone dental, vision and hearing insurance coverage is very popular among those on Medicare. But also very misunderstood.
In this video, I will review how you can get dental insurance coverage and how you compare one plan versus another. You will want to be able to sort through the plans that are available to you and identify the best value. So, grab a pen and paper and join me as we guide you through dental plans that improve upon your Medicare.

I am absolutely thrilled to see Matthew provide a video on dental coverage. Perfect timing!
I watched all of his videos during the pandemic, before choosing a Medicare supplement and I tell everyone that needs help with Medicare questions to use Medigap Seminars services. Thank you, Matthew, for another great video.

K Coles I really appreciate the time Matthew puts into his videos. When I turned 62 yrs. old I watched his videos on choosing a medicare plan. Both my friend and I chose our plans from matthew and a supplement and have been very happy with them. I trust him very much and enjoyed his expert advice on choosing dental plans. Can't wait to look them over and choose one that is right for me. Thank you Matthew.

I was able to get insurance (In House) with my providing dentist. I will compare what I have with him to what is available next plan year. If people don't subscribe and use your expertise, they will be sadly misinformed by other companies. Thanks again Mr Claussen for Facts that benefit me not insurance marketers!! Kevin Johnson

Hi Matt. Glad you've started making videos again. The dental benefits topic is so timely. I've been researching full mouth restoration options for over 2 years, including going to Mexico, which I've decided against. Any insights you have on getting full mouth implants and teeth replacement, along with financing options, would be greatly appreciated. As usual, thanks for the information.

You did a good job explaining it but still so much to understand.

Hi Matthew, Thank You for you Helpful Informative Videos. Dental Insurance is very complicated and your Videos make it much easier to understand. I have a question about Medicare Medigap Plans. When a Person#1 turns 65 and receives PartA and particularly PartB of Medicare, the Person#1 has 6months to sign-up for a Medigap Plan without having to go through Medical Underwriting questions. However, if Person#2 has a Disability and receives Social Security Disability and Medicare PartA and PartB at age 45, then WHEN can Person#2 sign-up for a Medigap Plan without having to answer any Medical Underwriting questions. WHEN is Person#2's Free Enrollment Period in which Person#2 can sign-up for and simply be Accepted to a Medigap Plan without having to go through the Medical Underwriting questions, etc.?

Thanks for posting. Personally I have not found dental coverage to be very useful, even when I had an employer subsidized plan. You are often on the hook for a substantial portion of the total bill so in our case it is easier to pay directly rather then dealing with an insurance company.

Sad... the services most regularly needed by seniors have the least options. I wear hearing aids... it seems the cost of these expensive devices are not covered anywhere!

I have had Humana Gold for 6 years. It covers an eye exam and glasses once a year, and it also has dental coverage.

My wife just recently went on Medicare and my research process was finding a Plan beyond just Part A&B that INCLUDED some form of Dental and Eye care that Medicare DID NOT cover. We ended up signing up for a Aetna Advantage plan (at no cost) that had $2500 Dental and $1500 Eye care annually. For now... that covers our cost. As we age, we will probably get additional Dental/Eye supplemental insurance.

Excellent information on stand-alone dental care coverage. Thank you for that Matthew. I’ve read all the comments so far but none have asked about a general range what these policies cost. Can you enlighten me?
