Freddy Fender, born Baldemar Garza Huerta on June 4, 1937, was an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He was born in San Benito, Texas, and grew up in a Mexican-American family.

Fender started his music career in the 1950s, performing rock and roll and rhythm and blues in local clubs. In the 1960s, he recorded several hits in Spanish, including "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" and "Before the Next Teardrop Falls," which reached number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

Throughout his career, Fender continued to perform and record music in both English and Spanish, and he was a pioneer in the Tejano music genre. He was inducted into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.

Fender died on October 14, 2006, in Corpus Christi, Texas, at the age of 69. He is remembered as a talented musician and a trailblazer for Latin American artists in the American music industry.

I have a picture of me him and my son his Harley broke down on SPID IN corpus right in front of the car lot I worked at so I pushed it into my shop fixed it for him that was when he was going through dialysis I kept his bike there for about 3 months and he finally picked it up Great man

Freddy's ability to go from singing flawlessly in english to singing flawlessly in Tex Mex was not only fenominal i think it closed a huge gap between the races. Even though i do not speak Tex mex, i love to listen to freddy doing just that, in his music. May you Rest in peace Mr. Freddy Fender.

My Grandpa Marshall loved him. He would put his hand out and I would take his hand and we would dance. And, while we were dancing he would say "You hear that voice, remember it. Because he's one of the greats." To this day, whenever I hear Mr. Fender's voice I stop and listen with tears streaming and a smile on my face. Such a sweet memory of and with my grandpa. But, at the same time it breaks my heart because even after 30 years I miss him just as much... and yes, I'm standing in my kitchen with tears streaming and a smile on my face... explaining to 2 of my 5 g-babies 👩‍👧‍👦 why their G is crying and smiling 💜
