The James Webb telescope found the most distant and oldest supermassive black hole we've found to date. Its age isn't the only thing odd about it either, there's something else...

JWST is an enigma. The amount of discoveries it's making is phenomenal. Massive respect to its makers ..

This is beautiful. This knowledge we obtain from the JWST is such a privileged gift.

It's delightful to see the next generation being as excited as I was about the Hubble telescope.

A civilisation around some star in what is now the present day galaxy containing that supermassive black hole, looking at our galaxy;
"We've just discovered the oldest supermassive black hole in the universe".

Yep, light-speed is a very slow storyteller on a universal scale.

wow i never thought of it like that. the oldest things in the universe look the youngest to us

What I find fascinating about the concept of gravitational bubbles that can curve and fold the space time curvature around the gravitational bubble is that you can reach speeds beyond light speed because space itself is not limited to light speed, you could theoretically look at yourself in the past by doing this.

Thank you to everyone who took part in JWST’s design, construction and operation, all of you are a massive, unsung part of human history and you should be better remembered than that. Without you, we wouldn’t have it

Can we get a video on how they Measure the age of a black hole?

Greetings. I love your channel, thx 4 sharing! One thing I noticed in your commentary though... when referring to the name of a black hole, such as our own Sag A*, you cannot simply refer to it as "Sag A" as you did... it's correct name is "Sag A*" and the asterisk at the end is essential to show that is the name of a black hole. The way you said it, without saying "star" at the end to denote a black hole, is the way you would refer to a star in a binary star system (ie. Sirius A and Sirius B). I know it seems like such a small thing, but it's essential if you don't wish to confuse the two.. hope this helps, and again, thx for sharing.. - Darren

So now we can not only see a black hole, estimate it’s weight, and now determine how old it is? Cool

It's not always about size it's about how long you last

13 billion years: young 💀
9 million solar masses: small 💀

Remember kids, there is no real way to date a black hole

Funny how JWST has at once brought the Big Bang into question, but at the same time we know how old a beyond belief distant object is. It's also funny that we know time isn't a constant yet we think time has always functioned the same so we can judge the age of things by how time works relative to us in our neck of the woods. As though an exploding universe with mass moving in all directions at once at incredible speed wouldn't lead to all sorts of dilations.

No, you are seeing the black hole as it was 13 billion years ago. It's probably much, much, much bigger now (whatever "now" means in this context). The real questions is, how were any black holes able to form so soon after the beginning of everything?

When people say "fingerprints of God", this is how I imagine it. The DNA of God is written in existence.

Imagine all the stars, moons, planets and probably many galaxies it already suck in. Mind blowing

My theory about why the telescopes cannot detect anything in the center of it is that maybe it is an unknown element that cannot be seen by camera nor by natural colors we see in earth. Mind-blowing ! 🔭👀❓
