Kill By Afterburner - How an F-4 Phantom Downed an Enemy Aircraft By Jet Blast

When Egypt and Syria launched their surprise attack against Israel on 06 October 1973, their plan included helicopter commando raids deep behind Israeli lines on the Sinai Peninsula. The Israeli rear area was almost undefended by ground troops and Egyptian commandos could have easily disrupted the supply lines. F-4E Phantoms were the only weapons available which could prevent such an outcome. Shooting down helicopters wasn't easy. Sun was setting, missiles were useless and Phantom pilots weren't quite sure which gun attack setting to use. One of them, Shlomo Egozy eventually used a very unusual weapon for the kill which made him and his back seater, Roy Manoff aces.

F-4E Phantom variants used for this reenactment are slightly more recent than the ones used historically. The same goes for Sidewinder missiles. These are not mistakes but closest available choices. Getting hit square on by those two F-4 engines in full after burner mode must have put that Mi-8 inside a vacuum where the rotors had no lift, or air to bite into.

In 1982 in Lebanon, a SAA T-62 shot down a IDF Hughes MD-500, the tank shot hit below the helicopter and the the rocks of the blast wreck the MD-500.

That's cool! IAF camouflage looks really cool on Phantoms. If I recall it correctly, there was a mission in the old Jane's IAF game involving intercepting helos, possibly a reenactment of this incident. Anyway, please give us more IAF Phantom action!

Reenactment of this was beautifully depicted in your video. Many thanks. It feels horrific to think about the person at the receiving end of the phantom's cannons.
As per the reenactment, mostly the cockpit or forward part of the MIL8 was hit first the pilots were killed instantly but the agony felt by commandos and the air crew might have been shocking.
Salute to the Gallant Pilots and air warriors of the both the sides who fought selflessly for their nations.

For difficult targets the Phantoms made short work of many helicopters. The downdraft, wake vortices and jet blast would undoubtedly been too much for a loaded helo to handle in such circumstances.

At the beginning of this war, the Israeli had a big problem with the egyptian AAA, they lost a lot of planes. But the egyptian made a mistake, they moved outside of their protection dome, so the israeli could attack. It's absolutly not easy to shoot an helicopter with a gun when you are in a jet plane, the diffference in speed is so important that you have few seconds for adjusting a shot.
It s a real performance to succeed.
