Thanks for this. The clear nylon is sharper and clearer but also has a plastic-y sound. Black nylon seems to have a higher tone but sounds like there is more going on.

The Clear Nylon is a brighter sound with a little more ring to it. The Black Nylon with the wound string softens the tone. Did not notice the difference as much with the blues.

I like the aesthetic of dark color strings on my ukuleles, so I decided a little over a year ago I was going to experiment with the dark strings that are out there. My current favorite set/combo is Aquila Lavas with an Aquila red low-g. I'm about to give worth browns another try though. I think I prefer the tone too in most cases. I don't think I'll go back anytime soon but I do like to experiment with strings. I will have to try these next. What a rabbit hole I've ventured down.

Great Comparison. Thanks! The blacks seem to have more overtones, which makes them ring a bit more than the clear ones. The black ones almost have a kind of bell-like quality whilst the clear have a warmer sound maybe with more depth in the lower tones.

The black nylon D'addario strings sound nicer on that uke to my ears. I have those strings on a Gretsch concert so maybe my ears are biased. 🤔

I couldn't hear a big difference but I am also fairly new to the ukulele. I have the clear ones on a sopranissimo size which make it sound clearer and brighter than it did before. Then again, that small size has a different sound than the bigger ones to start with.

I love the black nylon sound. Good video.

Great video, I personally prefer the black nylon strings, probably because my ukulele has those exact strings, so I’m used to it.

I like the sound of the black better, but I don’t like the appearance of the wound c. Thanks for doing these comparison videos Terry!

I think the clear ones are more direct in sound. (but therefore a bit more strenuous) A word about nylon. The sister of the ukulele, the timple canario are all played with nylon. The tradition goes back to old and bad times when fishing string was mostly used as sides.

I liked them both….but I like the way the black ones look.

I have a Tangi tenor double puka, and the maker put black nylon with wound C on…its all I’ve known, but I definitely love the sound vs clear nylon I’ve played (like every other uke I’ve ever come across has clear).

Opinion: Dark nylon improves ukes choked with paint/lacquer that sound (springy?) because you hear more string than hollow body projection. They also "sing" more, like a human voice or a sweet bell on better instruments.

I like the black nylon marginally more, but these are the best sounding of all the D'addario strings to my ear. Thank you for a great comparison!

Thanks so much for this review, I am a new uke player so this was helpful when coming across clear and black nylon and thinking they were probably the same, just different colors LOL. Great sound comparisons, love the side by side! What would you suggest for someone who has weak finger strength (for now) and having a somewhat hard time keeping strings pressed firmly down, not matter what wrist position I try... TIA! :)

SMOKY!!! That’s the word. I finally figured it out. Love the smoky sound of any colored strings.

Strictly from a technical standpoint, I've read that clear or white plastics degrade more quickly to UV than black plastics. I'm interested to see if anyone has anything to share about this regarding any kind of composite strings. I prefer the black aesthetic anyway since I would like my synthetic stuff not to look like mammal or other viscera. Intestinal style is really an acquired taste in my view.

I prefer the black strings I like the way they sound. I just ordered your Worth Brown strings waiting for them to be delivered so I can try them out on my tenor and concerts I always enjoy your video's there always helpful.Thank you for putting them on line sharing with us..👍😊

My guess that that the tonal differences have to do more with the string gauges than the color ... I like the black set sound and look better, but I personally don't care to deal with wound strings (which often have to be replaced more often). I think I'll stick with fluorocarbon and Aquilla sugar ... though I second that the D'Addario titanium strings are also nice.

I think the clear strings had a more pronounced "ping" to them, but I notice the same thing with some nylon guitar strings. I prefer nylon because they're easier on the fingers and allow the user to create a cleaner sound when forming chords. I also like that they don't rust and get hard. With cleaning strings are always better, but I still prefer nylon or softer wound strings. The black are not as sharp with a pronounced ping... almost subdued.
