It's bad Quality Control, they simply cannot have checked the GPU for it, seeing their infamous 0.5% press release again claiming 5080 wasn't affected made me angry

Surprised that NVIDIA didn’t just quietly alter the spec sheets so it turned into a story about most chips having 8 extra ROPs by mistake.

Nvidia is fumbling so much it's insane. I will be surprised if AMD with their 9000 Rdna 4 cards doesn't snatch back around at least 10% of the pc gpu market share in a couple years

Customer: Why is there a stock shortage for the 9800X3D?
AMD: Because Intel's CPUs sucked.
Customer: Why is there a stock shortage for the RX 9070 XT?
AMD: Because Nvidia couldn't deliver their RTX 50 series.

I worked on a Dell QA program and I'm practically positive that Dell was instructing techs to treat the Nvidia lead-free loose laptop GPU issue like a software / driver bug. ( plausible deniability, etc ). Clients just kept looping through the same support script with no resolution.

I know Jarrod’s Tech was at least saying that while he also heard about these reports from sources, he at least said that none of the laptops had been confirmed by the sources to be missing ROPS. But we’ll still have to see.

I wonder if it's a design error where they thought they'd still have access to the ROPs after disabling some TPCs but they don't. It was speculated by GN and it makes sense.

bad quality became since the gtx 9xx series and it started to be worse every time they "upgrade" their gpus, and they still cut our gpus by not giving us more vram but only 8gb ram, its nuts.

Its actually impossible that nvidia didnt know about rops, every card is scanned before being sent out of the factory, ask steve. They knew but chose to ignore it. They also at the very least knew the power connector had issues on the 4090, even an idiot would be able to deduct that ~600w through the same connector might just burn someones house down. Nvidia are guilty on both counts

How could this launch have gone more badly. Hearing all the problems lined up sometimes is shocking.

That's freaking wild. I don't understand how this history of f-ups never seems to erode Nvidia's mindshare. Any bump in the road for AMD seems to go nuclear in the Fanboy Wars, but Nvidia can just set the garden rake to full-auto and it's business as usual for consumers...

Jensen Huang does not care about its customer base on the gaming GPU side and never has.

Bet none of the AI cards are missing anything.

I am calling it. On 60 series you won't be able to get a readout for ROPS on GPU-Z. They already got rid of the hotspot sensor.

I got a MSI Vector 16 w/ i7 14700HX 4080 for $1800 I got a good deal instead of waiting for these 50 series Laptop.

Nvidia doesn't care about us poor people who can only pay 2000 for a card. Google, Meta, Open AI, and many others are willing to pay 6000-38000 more for the same silicone with some more VRAM some may ask for HBM.

My middle child works at Siltronic and kept saying that Nvida was going to use a bunch of wafers that suffered from some type of splitting issue (I'm sorry I don't know the specifics because I didn't really understand what he was trying to explain) that had been fabed for GB200 applications but they felt this issue wouldn't affect its ability to be a GPU. And this problem was caused by a fabrication process not a silicone quality issue. But yea I was really looking at getting a 5000 series card because AMD was not looking at making a high end card, and we didn't know the 9070 was going to be as good as it is today.

Im glad that I listened. I was eventually okay with the price and I was eventually okay with the decision to use this new power connector, then we didn't get load balancing and hardware level issues. I haven't seen anything like this in my almost 30 years of building PCs

I think Jensen will be fuming. Not because of the recall, but because he knows he has to go all in AI and has to leave gaming behind (forced by shareholder value). And then the gaming devision makes such a blunder as to not check the dies for missing rops... In all skus!
