Simplified Edrophonium Test

The edrophonium or tensilon test is a medical diagnostic test used to evaluate muscle strength and detect certain neuromuscular disorders. Here's a simplified explanation of the test:

Purpose: The test is performed to assess muscle strength and identify conditions that cause muscle weakness, such as myasthenia gravis.

Procedure: A small dose of the drug edrophonium chloride is injected into a vein or given as an intramuscular injection. Edrophonium temporarily blocks the breakdown of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, which helps transmit signals between nerves and muscles.

Observation: After the administration of edrophonium, the healthcare provider observes the patient for any changes in muscle strength and function.

Expected response: In individuals with myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular disorder characterized by muscle weakness and fatigue, the test often leads to a temporary improvement in muscle strength. This improvement occurs because edrophonium increases the availability of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction.

Duration: The effects of edrophonium are short-lived, typically lasting for about 5 to 10 minutes. Therefore, the test is relatively brief.

Follow-up: Based on the results of the tension test, further diagnostic tests may be recommended to confirm or rule out a specific neuromuscular disorder.

Remember, this is a simplified explanation, and if you require more detailed information about the test or its implications, it's important to consult a healthcare professional.

beautifully explained sir..
but i have a question that how to diagnose mysthenia gravis with the drug edrophonium bcs it can also cause cholinergic crisis?

Very informative video lecture. Any example medicine cause too much cholinergic to the muscle?

Can this apply more to some muscle groups, e.g. the quadriceps, as opposed to other muscle groups, e.g. shoulder muscles?

Or will MG always show up in all muscles?

Nice lecture. But you didn't discuss the edrophonium (Tensilon Test) which differentiates the 2 conditions. That is very important point without it the lecture will not help for both board exam and clinical treatments.

If it is just desensitized with loss of function to contract, can you please explain the hyperactivity of the muscarinic receptors that cause rapid and sometimes severe sudden changes including flushing, diarrhea, cramping, vomiting, diaphoretic, loss of bladder function, sialorrhea etc? To my understanding, mere loss of contraction cannot do this. Perhaps it’s the combination of desensitization and over stimulation?
