It took 10 billion years for the light originating from Ton 618’s spewing accretion disk to reach us us now. It much further away than 10 billion light years currently probably more than twice that far.

It’s scary to think of space just physical space, the empty void, can carry light with information from the past, that’s crazy, “seeing it as it was 10 billion years ago” like bruh the vastness of space is just horrifying.

So basically, ton 618 was around before the earth started spinning (3b years ago)

For those who don’t realize :
So it would take about 10 billion LIGHT-YEARS.
Knowing that 1 light-year = about 9, 46e+15km .
10 billion = 10e+9
So if you want to have the distance in km you have to do : 9, 46e+15 X 10e+9 = 9, 46e+24 km, which is absolutely enormous. It is not exactly 10 billion light-years to reach it, but more like 18, 2 billion light-years.
So if we were travelling at the speed of light, even 10 billion years wouldn’t be enough to reach TON-618.
And its size is about 66 billion times the sun’s

TON 618 is the designation for a supermassive in the constellation Canes one of the most massive black holes known, with an estimated mass of around 66 billion times that of our Sun. TON 618 is also an extremely powerful quasar, emitting enormous amounts of energy. Quasars are active galactic nuclei powered by accretion of matter onto a supermassive black hole. TON 618's immense size and energy output make it a notable object of study in astrophysics, providing insights into the formation and evolution of galaxies and black holes.

In which Galaxy, does the TON-618 located at?

If that thing turns into a quasar, it's so over.

For those saying Phoenix a is the “biggest” black hole the mass of Phoenix A was calculated using a model which links the star density profile of the galaxy to the adiabatic (without the transfer of heat) growth of the supermassive black hole at the core. This model is very new and doesn’t have a lot of strong backing in the scientific community yet, and this application of adiabatic growth has a limit which Phoenix A may approach. The reason the mass can’t be conventionally measured is because it is to far away for us to have good measurements of the dynamics of nearby star’s (phoenix a is~8 gigalightyears away), and doesn’t appear the way other quasar’s do. Ton 618 has a characteristic brightness which we can use to approximately determine it’s mass, despite it being much further away. so it might not actually not be the biggest.

Would you rather travel to TON 618 or the bottom of the Mariana Trench?
