Minds on Math, co-sponsored by the Lab for the Developing Mind at New York University (director, Dr. Moira Dillon) and by the National Museum of Mathematics and supported by the National Science Foundation, features accomplished scholars in developmental psychology, cognitive science, mathematics, and education, who conduct research on how our minds and brains learn and appreciate math and related fields.

Dr. Elizabeth Spelke, the Marshall L. Berkman Professor of Psychology at Harvard University and the director of the Laboratory for Developmental Studies at Harvard, is the inaugural speaker for the Minds on Math talk series.

Title: "Foundations of Mathematics in Early Childhood"

Abstract: "Research in developmental cognitive science sheds light on a set of mathematical abilities that are present at birth, that function throughout life, and that guide children's mastery of new mathematical concepts and operations. Could these findings provide ways to make education in mathematics more effective for all children?

Join Dr. Elizabeth Spelke, Marshall L. Berkman Professor of Psychology at Harvard University, as she shares results and insights from laboratory-based research as well as field experiments in homes and schools in India and Ghana. Findings from these studies illustrate both the promise and the challenges of building on basic research to support children's learning, suggesting ways that all families might enhance their children's learning of and love for mathematics."
