Ethiopia Rushes Defence Minister to Somalia | Firstpost Africa
Ethiopia’s defence minister has travelled to Somalia for a bilateral visit, the first time since diplomatic ties between the two neighbours nosedived last year. Ethiopia said that the two countries have agreed to collaborate on the African Union’s new peacekeeping mission in Somalia, which is tasked to fight the Al-Shabaab terrorists. However, Somalia has not yet commented on whether that was discussed or not. Instead, it reportedly said that the protracted diplomatic dispute between the two countries was over. The Ethiopian delegation’s visit was coming after ties between Addis Ababa and Mogadishu worsened in 2024 over Ethiopia’s plan to build a naval base in the breakaway Somali region of Somaliland. Somalia viewed this as a breach of its sovereignty. After months of rhetoric and failed international mediation, the two countries finally signed a peace deal in Ankara in December and vowed to move towards peace.
