On Cars - New crash prevention tech is more backward-looking than ever

Not a lot makes you feel stupider than backing into something. These kinds of collisions don't account for a lot of injuries or deaths, but they are costly. Backup cameras will be required on all new cars in the U.S. starting May, 2018, but there is a lot more tech to help when you are in reverse.

Did Cooley actually hit the other cars or pole for demonstration!? That's cool.

I was wondering, if all these technologies are saving so much money in accident prevention, why is my insurance still going up? I have a clean accident free driving record, and I’m not the only one wondering, shouldn’t it go down or at least stay the same since they’re saving so much on less accidents?

I don’t nose into parking spots anymore. Get the hard crap out of the way and back in.

Another reason why I hate insurance companies. They wont bother to pass the savings on to you if you have one of these cars. The theory is you make it possible for someone else who has a much more expensive car to repair not to pay so much so its equal for everyone. But if your credit is bad, we hike your rate! Cause its related and we can. Talk about crooks.

I’m okay with just a backup camera 🤷🏻‍♂️

What we need is a system that prevents the door from swinging fully open (next to another car) because of a sudden gust of wind as you try to get out.

I’m curious what the decrease in accidents or reports was when cross traffic alert came out. My old 2010 Ford fusion sport had cross traffic alert I think it’s called BLIS and it was great

how about not making rear windows so small, m'kay? that way we can use the backup cameras and the window.

Some old vans used to have mirror on top of tailgate pointing down in order to see what is behind bumper.

I have Daewoo Lanos sedan. I can not see it pass rear doors or pass rear window, as body curves away. I have never bumped into anything.

And even if I bump, bumper is made to take impact. Bumper is soft plastic, behind it is some kind of foam, then 10cm of space and then solid metal bar before body on each end. Distance between front bar and radiator is almost 20cm.

Today bumpers are part of body and their purpose is not to protect your car from expensive damages, but just to comply with law.

I need wheel crash prevention for parking situations

All I want is for driverless vehicles to be on the road so I can stop not being able to write off my depreciating asset. Get rid of insurance or the very least shrink it down to 5% of it's overall size.
