If I start a wine company, I'm calling it corkage fee.

The Corkage fee in restaurants is a requirement for a liquor license. All alcohol on the premises must be handled via a transaction, since it's illegal to bring outside alcohol into a bar/other alcohol-serving restaurant they charge a corkage fee to legally make that wine part of the transaction, therefore not violating the liquor laws.

Some restaurants will charge more to make a profit on not serving their own wine but it's still a necessity, otherwise they can't allow you to bring in your own wine AT ALL.

This law, however, does NOT allow you to bring in a corked bottle of spirits (distilled alcohol) only wines, beers, ales, meads, and other fermented drinks.

Corkage fee means bring your own cork screw or twist off tops, Don't forget the wine glasses. I always wondered what they would do if I brought in a box of wine.
